.1 ariB and (Garden SELECTING SEED CORN. Better Run Risk of Frost Then Pick the Eare Too Early. ; The first step .toward better seed corn for next year must be takeu lu the fall by selecting the seed ears from the stalks In the field. Tbe corn should be allowed to mature well on the stalk. By selecting the earliest maturing ears and picking them from the stalk as soon as the busks begin to : . turn yellow, which Is a common prac , v tlce. earllness is secured at tbe expense at vitality, writes Professor Moore of the University of Wisconsin in tbe American Agriculturist. ' A slight frost will not injure corn if it is well matured, and it is better to run the risk of a frost than to pick the ears too early. The latter part of the growing season seems to Improve the vitality of tbe corn greatly. Care should be taken in picking seed to secure ears which are attached to the stalk about three feet above the ground. Those ears which grow either very high or very low upon the stalk should be rejected, as they are unde sirable, having characteristics which we do not desire. For the same rea son we should avoid selecting ears with very short or long shanks or from' deformed stalks. . Go into the field after the husks on tbe ears have turned yellow and se lect the well formed ears from good stalks. Put them In sacks or baskets and bring them to the side of tbe field and. busk. It Js well Joollowdeflnlte rows in securing seed corn, otherwise a large number of good ears are missed. After the corn Is husked many ears will he found Imperfect and should be discarded. Only those ears should be retalued for curing for seed that are of pood form. Ped corn should be put into tbe proper place for curing tbe same day that it is taken from the field. LITTLE FACTS FOR FARMERS. There are now sixty-five active beet sugar factories located lu sixteen dif ferent states. Last year 805.000 acres were given over to beets, and the farmers delivered to the factories 3.470,000 tons. ' Good, strong, well developed pigs from mature sires and dams will make better growth and more economical gains than the underaizod ruuts that result from breeding Immature sowa to some slx-mouths-old boar pig. Somebody has estimated from sta , tistlcs that fruit trees and bushes will bear for the following periods: Apple. 25 to 40 years; blackberry, 6 to 14 years; currant. 20 years; gooseberry, 8 to 12 years; pear. 60 to 75 years: plum, 20 to 25 years; raspberry. 0 to 14 years; strawberry, 1 to 3 years. The largest grapevine in the world flourishes at San Gabriel, Cal. It was planted by the San Franciscan friars and is 120 years old. The stalk is one and one-half feet in diameter unci eight feet high, and the branches and foliage cover B.000 square feet. Last year 11 produced two nnd one-half tuns of grapes. A set of muley names, with the pro lections above tbe collar minus, and in extra short doubletree should be in the equipment of every orchardlst. They will make possible more thor ough cultivation near the trees and fewer injuries to them. Live Stock Notes. Horses that are used exclusively on the farm and do no road work should go unshod. A fattening animal should never have more food placed before It than. It will eat up eagerly. , If you keep your bogs In a pea all the time don't expect to makie any world astonishing profits. Tbe hog is a natural grazer. If dusty bay Is fed sprinkle with water and it will save tbe horse much annoyance. Better still, don't feed it at all If you can help it If corn Is scarce sheep will beat bogs on pasture, provided they get plenty of corn, but when the hogs get plenty of corn they will range pretty well with sheep. Experiments show that many tons of valuable bog go with the peanut crop and that after tbe peanuts have been gathered hogs can be turned in on tbe ground and fattened for market on what is left of the crop without other food. How fond hogs are of uillo maize Is demonstrated by tbe fact that If a drove of bogs is turned on a field plant ed in Indian com, KatHr corn and mllo they will devour the entire mllo crop before touching either of the other grains. Diversified farming and crop ro tation are the best antidote (or (arm mortgages. HARD FIGHT AHEAD. Vigorous Measure Needed to Save Country's Bean Crops From Disease. We are beginning to see signs of an tbracnose appearing in this country, and the disease will have to be fought hammer and tongs to keep it within control, says Field and Farm of Den ver. The cut shows the appearance of the fungus. When the disease reaches this stage bordeaux mixture has been effective in downing it In the west We buve the udvanttige of a dry cli mate not only in growing beans, but In fighting tbe diseases wblcb attack tbe A tortoise brought to the London zoo some ten years ago from tbe island of Mauritius, in the Indian ocean, is said to be the oldest living creature whose age is known with auy deflnlteness. This tortoise, which weighs a quarter of a ton. has lived at least 1G0 years, according to authentic records which have been kept. Elephants, whales, reptiles and some species of birds are said to occasionally reach an age of 100 years, but rarely do they exceed It. f T'rrrv nn By a special arrangement with the publishers, we are pleased to announce that, for a limited time only, we are enabled to furnish The Pacific Monthly , . : - AND THE Twice-a-Week Observer BOTH ONE YEAR FOR Only $2.25 Here is an offer that no family in Polk County can afford to miss. Here Are a Few Other Astonishing Bar gains in Reading Matter: liiifii nil BEANS AFFECTED WITH ANTHRACNOSB. From Field and Farm, Denver ! crop. Nearly every one is familiar with the spotted appearance of snap beans and especially of the wax pod ded varieties. 1'ractleally all parts of tbe bean plant except tbe roots are subject to attack. The most common indication of tbe presence of the disease is the occur rence of brown or black sunken areas on tbe stems, leaves and pods. Tbey may also appear on the seed leaves and stems of the plaut soon after ap pearing above ground and cause con siderable losses through a reduction in 'be, stand. On the older plants the attack is most serious on the larger veins of the leaves, and the leaf may be wholly de stroyed or Us eltli-leiii-y greatly reduc ed. From the Kleins mid leaves the fungus spreads to the puds. Hog Cholsra Preventive. The bureau of iiniinal Industry. United Slates department of agricul ture, gives the following recipe for hog cholera, which is claimed by many who have tried It to be invaluable in warding off disease: One part wood charcoal, one part sulphur, two parts sodium chloride (salti. two parts so dium bicarbonate isoda . two parts so dium hyposulphite, one part sodium sulphate, one part antimony sulphate. Pulverize and mix thoroughly. Dose, one tnblespoonful for each 200 pounds weight of bogs once a day. Ingredients of Best Fertilizers. The highest agricultural value In fer tlllzers is found in those that are man ufactured mainly from animal matter, stu b as aulmul bone, dried blood, ani mal tankage, nitrate of soda and high grade potash salts. It is remarkable bow quickly domes tic animals will resent hursh treat ment and yet how readily they will respond to gentle handling. Legal blanks (or sale at this office.
