In Saturday's assembly even resemb
ling bosslsm. The Republicans of Polk
County well knew that with the voters
of Folk County will lest the final word
as to the fitness of candidates, and that
to win the indorsement of their action
by the Republican voters at the Sep
tember primary, it would be necca
sary for them to select the very best
men available for the various offices
to be filled.
As a result of Saturday's meeting,
the Republican party of Polk County
Is organized for the coming campaign,
and its members will stand shoulder
to shoulder for the success of Repub
lican principles and Republican candi
dates at the November election. .
As a result of this meeting, the pec
pie of Polk County know where the
Republican party stands on questions
affecting their Interests. They know
that every candidate recommended by
this assembly stands committed to the
principles set forth in its platform.
The people have Been that no attack
was made on the direct primary law,
and that no attempt was made to place
the county under boss rule. They have
seen it demonstrated that the members
of a political party can come together
under the direct primary law, and
without attempting to set aside or
nullify a single provision of that law,
can work together honestly, harmon
iously and conscientiously to preserve
party organization and party integri
ty, and to aid in securing worthy and
capable men for positions of public
trust. -
With the senseless hue and cry that
Is being raised against the assembly
by selfish and designing interests in
Oregon, it is only to be regretted that
every voter in the state could not have
been present at the Republican meet
ing held in Polk County to see for
themselves how utterly false and un
worthy are the arguments that are
being urged against the assembly plan.

THE ASSEMBLY.
No more enthusiastic, harmonious
and representative gathering of Re
publicans was ever held in Polk Coun
ty than that of last Saturday, when
delegates representing nineteen of the
twenty precincts in the county met In
Dallas in response to the recent call
for a Republican assembly.
Neither In the precinct primaries on
Wednesday nor in the assembly on
Saturday was there anything even re
sembling a "slate" or "frame-up." No
attempt was made to influence any
voter in favor of any man, or set of
men. Factional differences were ig
nored as completely as if they had
never existed.
It "will be noticed that the Portland
Journal has had nothing to say about
the Republican assembly held in Polk
County last Saturday but Is devoting
the greater part of its space each day
to telling what great failures the as
semblies were In the counties where
they have not yet been held.

Exchanges.
Tom Rogers, who formerly was clerk
at the Miller pharmacy, was in Forest
Grove. last week renewing acquaint
ances. He recently disposed of a drug
store at Sllverton in which he was
interested. Forest Grove News.
C. E. Hicks, of the Independence
Enterprise, was a caller Friday. He
was paying a brief visit to his mother,
Mrs. L. R. Hicks, of the Sanitarium.

Miss Annis and Raymond Agee wen
to Dallas, Friday, for a, two weeks'
visit with their grandparents. Me

C. L. Sperling, who spent several
weeks here making improvements on
desert claims owned by himself and
several neighbors, returned last week
to his home at Independence. Quite
a number from that town will be here
this season to attend to their claims.

Master Waldo, son of R. Lee Sears,
accompanied his aunt, Miss Rose May-
field, to her home at Ballston last
week. He will be gone two weeks.
Uillsboro Independent.
Tom Kay, of Marlon, opposes the
assembly. The news will cause no
surprise. Tom Kay, of Marlon, will be
found opposing any movement not
having for Its object the advancement
of the political fortunes of his dear
friend George Chamberlain.
