MAIL CARRIERS MEET Rural Route Men Elect Officers for Coming Year. The rural letter carriers of Polk County held their annual meeting in Monmouth, Sunday, and elected of ficers for the coming year as follows: President, A. Parker, of Independen cs; vice president, Guv Metcalfe, of AirHe. B. F. Wells, of Dallas, handed in his resignation as Secretary-Treasurer and M. B. Grant, of Dallas, was elected to fill the office. Postmaster Wolverton, of Mon mouth, was present and gave an in teresting talk for the interest of the association. The visiting carriers were J. II. Going and J. Cornett, of Albany; H. Cumniings and 0. Lovell, of Corvallis; A. Loop and W. Kber Imrd, of McMinnville, and Mr Litch field, a member of the Marion County association. The members of the association present were: A. Parker and P. J. Dickinson, of Independence; A. F. Huber, of Monmouth; Guy Metcalfe and Ira Williams, of Airlie; J. R. Mor ton, of Rickreall, and M. B. Grant, of Dallas. The State carriers will hold theii; convention in Portland, June 24-215. Street Work Progressing. The work preparatory to macad amizing Main and Washington streets is progressing rapidly and the sub grade will soon be in readiness for the rock. Main street from Washington to the Willamette Valley Lumber Company's sawmills, and Washington, between Main and Jefferson, have been plowed, graded and rolled al together, a distance of five blocks. The rock crusher will soon be put in oper ation and it is hoped to complete the work already laid out before the Fall rains begin. Pay Fraternal Visit. Fifteen members of Jennings Lodge, No. ), A. Crider Building Under Way. Construction work on the Crider concrete building on Main street was commenced this morning. Oscar Holmes, the contractor, is in charge and has a dozen or more men excavat ing for the foundation. The new build ing will probably be completed by August 1, and will be used by Mr. Crider for store purposes. Poling, of The Dalles, are attending the com mencement exercises of Dallas College. Mrs. Emma Belt, after having spent the winter in San Francisco and Los Angeles, is now visiting in Salt Lake City. The Reverend, and Mrs. E. E. Mc Vicker, of lewisville, are attending the commencement exercises of Dal las College. Mr. and Mrs. L. Gerlinger, Jr., and Mayor and Mrs. . Eakiu motored to Portland this ' morning, where they will attend the Rose Festival for a few days. . . Mr. and Mrs. Warren Quick have moved from St. Helens to Ballston. Thcv will live in that town until Fall and will then move to the D. P. Stouf- fer farm and become permanent resi dents of Polk County. Mrs. Mary Sibley arrived in Dallas from her home in Fairfield, Illinois, yesterday and will visit several months at the home of her son, Jolm li. Sib ley. Mrs. Sibley greatly enjoyed the long journey to the coast and expects to like Oregon. Emerson Black is slowly recovering from the effects of his recent severe accident and is now able to walk with the aid of crutches. As soon as bis condition is sufficiently improved, be will leave for a visit to his old homt in Kansas. , Mrs. Oscar Havter left this morn ing for a six weeks' visit in Minneso ta, the home of her girlhood. She will visit in Brainerd, Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, and other cities, and will re turn home about July 15. Mr. Ilayter accompanied her as far as Portland. J)'r. James Withycombe, Director of the Experiment Station at the Oregon Agricultural College, spent a few hours in Dallas, Saturday morning, visiting friends and making new ac quaintances. The Doctor says he finds crops in Polk County in a promising condition, and he predicts large yields f both fruit and grain. He believes the day will come when the fruit crop of Oregon alone will bring $50,- 000,000 into the state every year. D. W. Soars was over from Inde pendence yesterday afternoon, greet ing old friends and looking after busi ness interests. .Nothing delights li. Just im agine this old Democratic war horse having to confine his- conversation to prunes and hops, with a state anil county campaign less than a month away. Truly, we have tallen upon evil days. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Crider arrived in Dallas Friday evening, from their home in San Jose, California, for a several weeks' visit at the home of their son Chauncey. They came north on the Shasta Limited and report the quickest and most pleasant trip they have ever taken over the houtliern ra cific roaij. Leaving their home after the lunch hour, they spent a few hours in San Francisco, and reached Salem the next day in time to take dinner with relatives. Mr. Crider will spend the greater part of his time during his stay in Dallas in overseeing the construction of the concrete build ing which is being erected by his son Chauncey on Main street. Celebrate Anniversary. Justice and Mrs.IIardv Holman were entertained at dinner at the home of their son-in-law, Edwin Jacobson, last evening in honor of the forty-ninth anniversary of their wedding day. Only a few relatives and friends were present.
