A WORD OF FAREWELL After a year's pleasant association, the present management of the Obser ver greets its readers for the last time through the columns of this paper. The next issue will be published bv J. C. Hayter, the former editor, who win resume control on July 1, after year's absence from the editorial desk, spent in travel, recuperation and preparation for the resumption of bis work. In bidding farewell to our patrons ana readers, we desire to thank them for their many acts of courtesy, which have contributed to make our past year s wont pleasant and successful. During that time we feel that we have formed a broad and congenial acquaintance with the people of Polk county and that our labors have not been without their influence for the Deneiit of our county. we nave endeavored to maintain trie work of the Observer office both in the editorial and the job depart ment at the degree of excellency to which it was raised by our predecessor and for which it was proverbial. In tnis we.thlnk that we may be pardoned ii we say toat we believe we have suc ceeded. Now as we relinquish our place to our successor, we desire to wish him and our friends in all parts of Polk county, the best of good fortuoe and a continuance of the pleasant relations which we have enjoyed durlDg the past year. Whlarnn'. items or interest From the Hi.nl. in the County Offices Briefly Told. Albert Teal received in Dallas, Sat urday night, three fine imported Swiss goats which he will send up to his ranch near Falls City. Mr. Teal already has 22 head of Texas milk goats on his ranch, but the three re ceived Saturday were the first thor ough bred Swiss goats that he had been able to secure in fact, the first that have ever been brought Into the state. Tliey are of the celebrated Toggen- oerg oreed, famous trie world over as milkers, and were secured from Mr. Fofttar. nf Rpdlnnrl. rirtlifnrnn ftnrnm Ineot goat breeder and one of six breeders who have thusfar been the only importers of Swiss goats to the United States. Mr. Teal has been working for nearly nine months to secure the three animals he received Saturday. First, noticing a short article in the Observer concerning the reputation of the Swiss goats as heavy milkers, he requested addresses of breeders from whom he might secure the ani mals. He was referred to the Bureau of Animal industry in Washington, D. C, where he was able at last to secure the names and addresses of the six enterprising breeders who had imported Toggenberg goats. Then followed several tnonthsof correspond ing with the different parties which finally resulted in a deal with Mr. Foster, of Redlands, whereby Mr. Teal was able to secure three of the valu ante animals, one buck and two nannies. Mr. Teal has been interested in the breeding of milk goats for some time and hopes by introducing this new blood into his already fine flock of Texas goats, to greatly improve his stock. The Toggenburg goat is one of the heaviest milkers in the world, giving from 4 to 5 quarts daily, with a lacta tion period of from 6 to 9 months. The milk is extremely healthful and is used extensively in the hospitals and sanitariums of the Alps in the treatment of tuberculosis and stomach troubles, the main point which recom mends it to men of the medical oro- ression, being its freedom from dangerous disease germs, the Swiss goats being very hardy and seldom infected with tuberculosis. The first shipment of Toggenburg goats, consisting of four animals, was biougnt to America In 1893. In 1904. twenty-six more goats were Imported and are thriving today on ranches in a number of the states of the Union. At Soehren's Warehouse.
