There is not a discordant voice in the chorus. Merchant, builder, banker, broker, manufacturer and savings bank presi dents proclaim that the new era of prosperity, the business of good times, Is right upon us." Then follows a long line of testimony from leading financiers and business men of the Nation, all uniting in declaring that the country was never Id a more healthy or promising condi tion. Another point upon which all agree is that the tariff is the only cause of delay. One prominent East ern manufacturer states the situation tersely when he says : "Activity should begin about July, in preparation of orders for the Fall trade, and the only thing that may hold us back is the tariff. Nothing much can be shaped up as so long as they hang onto that in Washington. As soon as they pass the bill, no matter how they settle it, business will pick up." With the present bright prospects for an early settlement of the question and speedy adjournment of Congress, the busi ness men of the country are all look ing forward to a wide, healthy expan sion of industry early this Fall. The funeral of the late Volney Eu gene Holmes was held at the family home Sunday afternoon, the Rev., Curtis P. Coe, of McMlnnville, and D. M. Metzger conducting the services. The remains were buried in the Odd Fellows' cemetery. Mr. Holmes' death occurred Satur day morning after an illness of a few weeks and was due to a complication of pneumonia and Bricrht'a disease The deceased came to Dallas about five years ago from Minnesota, and resided here continuously until the time of his death. He was born in Juneau County, Wisconsin in 1862 and resided there until about 21 years of age. He then moved to Wrenshall, Minnesota, where he made bis home until the year In which he moved with nis ramuy to uregoo. in nis young manhood he worked for a number of years as a brickmaker, afterward taking up the trade of a carpenter, which he followed duriDg the remain der of his life. He was married in 1892 to Miss May btreeter, who with four children, stir vives him. He is also survived by two sisters and eight brothers, all of whom reside in the East, with the exception of A. H. Street Work Resumed The work of preparing the streets for macadam was begun last week on Washington and Levens streets. The cement curbing bad already been Installeda nd last week's work con sisted mainly in plowing up the sur face and preparing the grade for its coating of crushed rock. On the block between Main and Church on Washington street, the teamsters have already begun to haul and distribute the crushed rock and that block will be the first to be completed in the new improvement district. A portion of the block was macadamized last year but the beginning of the winter sea son put a stop to the work before could be carried to completion. 3? Ward Evans, of Ariel, Washington visited over Sunday with friends in Dallas. County School Superintendent H. C, Seymour visited schools iu the Spring Valley section during the latter part of last week. C. Shannefield, manager of the Pacific Telephone Company in Polk county, was over from Independence today on a business visit. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Cornwall returned Saturday from an extended stay at .Newport and other coast resorts and will remain In this city for some time. Leo Bruckner Is quite ill at his home In this city. The attack siezed him while he was at work in his bakery this morning and he was taken home at once and medical assistance sum moned. It is not known yet whether or not his condition Is critical. Lloyd Henry returned yesterday from Corvallis, where he took part in the interscholaatio field and track meet Saturday. In the pole vault, in which he had entered, Mr. Henry had the misfortune to sprain his aukle in a vuuu oi reel B luetics and was unable to finish the contest. Thomas W. Brunk, a leading fnrmer and stockraiser of the Eola neighbor hood, was attending to business errands in Dallas, Saturday after noon. Mr. Brunk says the people of his neighborhood are anxiously look ing forward to the time when they will be able to visit the county seat by rail. Hon. J. H. Ackerman, 8tate Super intendent of Publlo Instruction, was a visitor in Dallas between trains Saturday. Superintendent Ackerman attended the closing exercises of the Perrydale public school Friday evening and delivered an address to the graduating class. He went to Ballston, Saturday afternoon and attended similar exercises there in the evening. Appointments' of deputy grand patriarchs made at the close of the Grand Encampment of Odd Fellows In Albany last week included the following in Polk County: Hon. J. E. Sibley, of Dallas for District 18, and J. E. Hubbard, of Independence, for District !8. Mrs. H. B.
