The work of the men io the fire department was prompt ai)d effective at yesterday's fire, yet they admittedly found themselves hampered in the work by the scantiness of the member ship of the company. This is a matter that has been under discussion for some time and a matter that should not be left long undecided. It is of personal interest to every property owner of Dallas to see that means be found for the prompt recruiting of the ranks of the firemen, when cir cumstance make it necessary for some to retire from membership. TWO MORE VICTORIES The May term of the Circuit Court in Judge George H. Burnett's depart ment was convened in this city by him at 10 o'clock yesterday morning. The grand jury selected was as fol lows : James A. Gibson, foreman ; B. M. Wonderly, Fred Johnson, W. S. Campbell, B. B. Knowles, Eugene Byerley, W. E. Scott, with Hardy Hol man as bailiff. The jury was dis missed this afternoon. Several bills were found but none have been made public as we go to press. C. W. Matthews and Thomas Edgar were arraigned before the court yes terday morning on the charges of the illegal sale of liquor and of gambling, both entered a plea of not guilty this morning. Both appeared this after noon and, withdrawing their pleas of not guilty, pleaded guilty to the oharges of gambling and were fined $100 apiece and costs, the charges (f illegal sale of intoxicating liquors being dismissed. The case now before the court is that of M. Bailey vs. Benton County, which was brought into Polk county by a change of venue, It being claimed that an Impartial trial could not be secured in Benton county. I vie 4 Bayne Craven Brothers Another couplet of victories was added to the record of the Dallas Grays, Saturday and Sunday in games asainst the Chemawa Indians and the Dilworth Derbies, of Portland The scores were as follows: Dallas 7, Chemawa 3 ; Dallas 6, Derbies 3. Saturday's game was an interesting contest in spite of the evident supeiiority of the local nine over the Indian aggregation. Dallas gained a lead in the first inning which was easily increased with nearly every succeeding inning of the game. Dur log the entire game Chemawa made only 5 hits to Dallas 13. The finest feature of the game was the clever work of "Bud" Jones, the Dallas pitcher. He appeared to toy with his opponents and several times with the bases full and a run appar ently Inevitable, he would suddenly appear to rally and, striking out the batters in "one, two, three order would retire the Indians without a score. During the game Jones is credited with 14 strike outs to 5 by Darnell, of Chemawa. The game with the Derbys, Sunday, was ended in the seventh inning by rain, but even at that time the score, 6 to 3, was overwhelmingly in favor of Dallas. Doty, in the box for the local team, played a clever and heady game, striking out 10 men and allow ing the Derbys only two hits. Dane, of Portland, struck out only two and allowed 5 hits. Saturday's line-up was as follows: Dallas Rice r f, Tooze 2d, Fenton s s, C. Boydston c, W. Barbam 3d, F. Boydston 1st, E. Barbam 1 f, J. Bar bam and Teats c f, Jones p ; Chemawa Teabo c, David 2d, Clark 1st, Gra ham 1 f, Quenpalma r f, Darnell p, Dan c f, Miller 3d, Sorter s s. The line-up of the Dallas team Sunday was the same with the exception of Doty and Shaw, who replaced Jones and Boydston as the battery. The Derbys were as follows : Harris 1st, Irwin 3d, Hughes r f, Hirsber s s, Moore c f, Strict 2d, Gunn r f, McKin non c, Dane p. Next Sunday, Dallas will play the G. Mack team, of Portland, an all- professional aggregation and one of the fastest teams outside the big coast leagues. The game will be one of the hardest that the Dallas team will be required to play this season.
