The Polk County mohair pool, con sisting of soma 50,000 pounds, was sold Tuesday for 25 cents a pound With the Eastern mills offering only 27 cents, the local growers of this popular and well-known staple have good cause to rejoice in the success of their organized effort to secure the very highest obtainable price for their product. Indeed, those persons un familiar with local conditions will be inclined to wonder where the 25-cent bidder is "going to get off," after pay ing the expenses of baling the hair and shipping it to the far distant market. The answer is found in the fact that the mohair grown in the Dallas dis trict is superior to that produced else where in Oregon, and in the further fact that the buyers are always will ing to bid a shade higher for the Polk county product than for that of any other goat-raising section of the Northwest. All buyers frankly admit that the Dallas hair has no equal in evenness and fineness of texture, and the large attendance of these agents and the spirited bidding at the Polk county sale each year proves that the competing mills are all anxious to secure this choice clip, even to the extent of apparently paying more than the existing market condition will justify. This highly satisfactory state of affairs in the local market has not come about through accident, neither is it necessary to seek far for its cause. It has been brought about through the action of the Polk County farmers themselves in carefully and intelli gently co-operating to bring their flocks up to the very highest standard of excellence. The farmers of the Polk County hills long ago learned that the trim and fleet little Angora could not be excelled as a profit-pro ducer, and they also learned that the better the grade of stock, the higher the profit on each animal. Careful breed ing, liberal expenditure of money in importation of the best blood, annual shows to create a spirit of friendly rivalry among the growers, frequent meetings for the purpose of exchang.
