THE COMING ELECTION.
With only a little more than a week
remaining in which petitions may be
nied, bufjive candidates have form
ally appeared for the city elections
which will be held April 6. All are
good, representative men and men
well calculated to serve the Interests
of our city In a careful and efficient
manner, if the people see fit to elect
them. There still remain, however, a
number of offices for which no
candidate hag yet filed his petition
and the ticket for the city elec
tion remains therefore, incomplete.
J.ne selection of a good and efficient
Council is just as vitally important to
us as citizens of Dallas, as the selec
tion of county officers is important to
ua as citizens of Polk county. The
demand is equally urgent in our city
eieotiou as in our county election, that
the best and most competent men be
brought out, and it behooves us to see
ttiut the remainder of the now incom
plete city ticket be filled before the
close of the time in which the petitions
may be Clod.
Between 6000 and 6000 immigrants
will probably make their homes in
the Willamette Valley within the next
six months. This at least is predicted
by many who have noted the eager
ness with which Easterners are
already taking advantage of the
colonists rates westward. A cer- i
tain proportion of tfiese will come to
Polk county and to Dallas. Just how j
great or how small that proportion j
shall be rests with us. Practically !
every community in the Willamette !
Valley Is now thoroughly imbued with j
the spirit of publicity, or as the popu-1
lar phrase has it, "boosting." Sur- j
rounded by counties and cities that!
are eagerly thrusting forth their var-!
lous merits to the prospective settler, i
Polk county and the cities of Polk 1
county cannot afford to be silent. It is '
up to thera to get Into line and do the 1
same, if they desire their share of the
new and desirable population that is
now coming Into Oregon.
