That hot political poker, the normal school question, that has puzzled the Legislatures of Oregon since the gray dawu of the history of the State's edu cational system, has been juggled quite as gingerly and unsuccessfully as of old, by the Legislature just adjourned. Vast smoke was created and boisterous confusion of conflict ing interests, the educational phase of the subject being lost in the shadow of the political phase, which in turn gave place to nothing more Imposing, dur ing the last hours of the session, than a highly exciting, but quite unherolc cat spitting bout between the two bouses of our august legislative assembly. The residue to the normal schools, from that protracted struggle, is about as large and substantial as the rem nant uf that historic snake fight, in which ouch reptile entirely swallowed the other, and the honor accruing to the Legislature for its solution of the puzzle, is approximately the same. The normal schools have not been abolished they have been reduced to a condition equivalent to that of dis- ombodied spirits, and the State Board has them still to control, but nothing substantial with which to control them, Tno normal school question is farther from settlement than ever be fore and in addition, has been snarled and tungled up like an eel in a llsh linu. The luto Legislature, like others before it, when it saw the responsibil ity of the final and definite solution of the problem decending upon it, kicked up as much dust as possible and slip led from under in the confusion, leav iugtbe aforementioned responsibility to perch on the shoulders of the legis lative body that shall succeed it. Two of the Normal schools, Ashland aril Monmouth, are stubbornly refus ing to play the disembodied role that lias been thrust upon them and are pp-pfinijg to take a new lease of life until the next Legislature comes to th-ir aid. Of what avail their loyal and worthy efforts shall be, may not be decided until thut time. In the meantime the great problem is un solved and will likely remain so until some power raises up a Legislature big and broad enougli to assume it, with its resposibiiity, purge out the cliafTof political device and pretext thut has crept into it and, as a Legis lature working for the best educat ional interest of all Oregon, settle it on a sound, efficient basis once for all To temporized, to shirk, to shift re HiK.nsibility, is jK-rhaps moreconduc ive ii the personal political comfort of the individual me mber of the Leg. mauve assembly, but such methods will never bring the matter to any tiling like a settlement, though Leg isiaiures couvono until the last trumpet blows. The provisions of the new bill revis. log the state game laws and repealing all former measures, as passed in both houses last week and submitted to the governor for his signature, are briefly as follows. : Perpetual closed season for female deer. Prohibits use of dogs in bunting deer. Forbids the use of blinds or lying in wait on trails. Imposes heavy penalty for mutila tion of carcass to disguise sex. Incorporates law making the closed season for elk last until Permits the sale of ducks between November 15 and December 15. Open season for ducks from October 15 to February 15. Limit for day's shoot ing 25 ducks. Chinese pheasants may be hunted between October 15 and November 15, but no females pheasants may be killed. Pheasants raised in captivity may be sold when the birds are pin ioned, but the sale of the game will be under the supervision of the county game warden. Lloyd Launer was married to Miss Hattie Lee, in Grants Pass, Saturday. Mr. Launer was formerly a resident of this city and a student of Dallas College, leaving this city a few years ago to take a position in the bank in Grants Pass, where he has been quite successful and has won many friends, Mr. Launer and his bride will make their home in that city. The Y. W. C. A. held a very pleas ant meeting in the association rooms Sunday afternoon, Miss Lucy Hop kins, Coast Secretary of the Y. W. C. A., presiding. Before the meeting the young women gave a fine dinner. Nearly all of the girl students of Dal las College were represented in the gathering and a numberof the women of the Advisory B iaid were also pres ent. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hollister re turned yesterday from Salem, where their daughter, Mrs. Arthur Phelps, is under medical care in the Salem Hospital. Mrs. Phelps was obliged to undergo an operation yesterday, but at latest reports was improving nicely from its effects, with the promise of a j speedy recovery. Drs. Bollman and .Meuaiion took Mrs. Phelps over to Salem, Sunday afternoon. The Willamette Valley Lumber Company this morning shipped out an order of timbers. 2S by 2S inches and B0 feet in length, billed for Buf falo, New York. The b:g sticks were too long for a single car and had been loaded onto two "Hats" chained to gether. They are beautiful represen tatives of the ifiility of timber the sawmills are able to cut from our enormous forests of ''Oregon pine."
