Mr. and Mrs. Dan Brown returned yesterday from a few days' visit at the home of Mr. Brown's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Brown, in McMinn ville. - Several flocks of wild geese have been observed southward bound dur ing the past three or four days, which is regarded by many as a sure sign that the winter season is upon us. At the meeting of the Oregon State Bar Association in Portland, Attor ney Oscar Hayter was elected vice president for the First District and was also chosen chairman of the executive committee. He collided accidentally with one of the other players and in some manner cut a deep gash in bis chin, four stitches being required to close the wound. The room in the Williams' buildin g just east of Shultz's grocery is nearly ready for occupancy by Barnhart & Grant's meat market. The excellent fixtures that are being installed will make it one of the finest establish ments of its kind in Dallas. A mass meeting will be held in the Courthouse, Sunday afternoon,' at 3 :30 o'clock for the purpose of discussing and considering plans for the estab lishment of a hospital in Dallas. Every progressive and public spirited citizen of Dallas is cordially invited to be present. Three men at Powell's logging camp were thrown from a runaway car on one of the spur tracks Tuesday and considerably shaken up, one of them breaking his arm. Aside from that they were but slightly injured, but escape is considered highly fortunate considering the peril they were in. At a meeting Monday night, pre sided over by State Manager F. E. Taylor, the members of the Fraternal Brotherhood initiated four new mem bers, Verne O. Launer, Chester Sie farth, H. Llndel and Jacob Nickel. After the business session refresh ments were served and the remainder of the evening was spent in a pleasant social manner. A telegram was received in Dallas, Wednesday morning, announcing the death of Henry Howe at his home in Belhngham, Washington. The tele graphic message was followed yester day by a letter from Frank Howe, a son of the deceased, giving the particu lars of his sudden death, which was due to an attack of asthma and heart trouble. Mr. Howe had gone to bed on Mon day night apparently iu the best of health. Shortly after he awoke Tues day morning the attack occurred, resulting in death within the period of only two hours. Henry Howe was a son of William and Catharine Howe and was born in Newtown, Indiana, November 11, 1832. He came to Oregon in 1851 and lived near Perrydale until 18G0, when he moved to Dallas. He was married in Goldendale, Washington, August 20, 1867, to Miss America Jenkins, who died in this oity October 15, 1897. After her death he moved with his family to Skagway, Alaska, and after a few years resi dence in that city, went to Bellinghara, Washington, where he resided until the time of his death. He is survived by three brothers, Robert and James Howe, of Dallas, and Zachary Howe, of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Shoeniake, of Seattle, and a son, Frank Howe, of Beliingham. The remains will be brought to Dallas this morning and the funeral service will be held in the Methodist church at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be in the old cemetery west of the Odd Fellows cemetery. A man of many excellent qualities, Mr. Howe gained the respect and friendship of all, and his sudden death will occasion the deepest and most sincere regret among his many friends. At the meeting of the Rebekahs Wednesday night, the members of the lodge presented Mrs. H. B. Cosper with a beautiful piece of cut glass in token of th-Mr appreciation of her faithful and unselfish work during the past eight years, In which she has served continuously in the office of Grand Secretary. The presentation speech was made by Miss May Shelton and Mrs. W. L. Soehren presented the gift in behalf of the lodge. After this brief ceremony the remainder of the evening was given over to a social entertainment and a delicious lunch eon was served. The Rev. H. H. Farnham visited in Independence, Wednesday. Mrs. S. P. Riggs has returned from several weeks' visit in Roseburg and Cottage Grove. The Rev. Father H. J. McDevitt, of Portland, arrived in Dallas, Wednes day evening for a few days' visit. Mrs. E. J. Bryan, of Richland, is down for a few weeks' visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Chapman, Mrs. Anna Coad is slowing recover' Ing from her recent severe illness, Her sister, Mrs. J. S. Cooper, of Inde pendence, is visiting her this week. Professor D. M. Metzger received a telegram Tuesday, announcing the death of bis father, Jacob Metzger, at his home at Linden, Pennsylvania. Mr. Metzger was about 78 years of age. County School Superintend ent H. C. Seymour has been visiting among the schools In the northeastern portion of Polk county during the present week taking occasion while near Salem to visit that city and attend the Marion County Teachers' Institute. Birds have been quite scarce and the majority of the hunters enjoyed but indifferent success. An equally un satisfactory season is reported in many other portions of the Willamette Valley, and it Is thought that these conditions will bring about an effort on the part of the sportsmen to have more stringent game laws enacted, so that the game bird may be betu-r protected and given a better oppor tunity to multiply.
