Polk County Observer ALLGOOD & COLLINS LESSEES Published Semi-Weekly at 11.50 per Year. Strictly in Advance. Kntered as second-clsss matter March 1, 1007. at the post office at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of congress ol Marco a, 18, y. DALLAS, OREGON, Novum beb 20 1908. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. work that bag usually been considered the especial property of laborers of the masculine gender: Bakers, 35;"bank employes, 15; blacksmiths, 1; car penters, 5 ; clergymen, 45 ; contractors, 1 ; electricians, 3; engineers and sur veyors, 4; farm laborers, 165; hunters, trappers aDd guides, 25; lawyers, 10; lutziberwotnec, 6; painters, 6; sailors, 2; plumbers, 2; teamsters, 6; wood cutters, 3. THE FIRST YEAR'S GROWTH, After a summer of constructive activity in liDes of street and road improvement, the machinery of the county and of the City of Dallas has been stopped, taken down and safely stored away for the winter season. To those utder whose eyes the work of Improvement has been carried on, the progress has been so gradual that now, wheu the work Is allowed temporarily to lapse, they cannot readily appreciate the extent of that development that has been going on steadily and surely during the past three months. It is the ones who make only infrequent visits to the city who are able justly to reckon the extent of the improvement on its streets and it is the ones who make only infrequent journeys over the roads on which macadam has been laid during the past summer who can adequately describe the extent of the improvement The opinion of these is without exception unqualifiedly affirmative. Where Dallas a year ago excited con siderable contemptuous fun-making from transient guests on account or the disordered and unsightly appear anceof its streets in comparison with its many other and more creditable features, the unvarying comment of the visitor who is passing through once more (for the first time in several months perhaps) is one of surprise and pleasure at the neat appearance of the newly built streets in the busl ness section. The same thing is characteristic of tho recently improved roads. Men who were forced to urgo their teams at a snail's pace through strips of road where the mud fairly oozed about their hubs last winter, speak of the same strips now as the best roads in the county. So much for tho potency of crushed rock. In the campaign for street Improve ment and road Improvement, both the city council and the County Court have had to face strong opposition and bitter criticism from those who doubted tho results of their efforts. But in spite of all that, it must be admitted that so far they have both ra ado good. Now that they liavo proven them selves to havo boon working in a good and worthy cause, those who opposed will cease to opposo and those who "boosted" will "boost" with reuewet zesianu in anoiner summer, wo may look to see oven a greater and more exteusive development la both lines of work, than was accomplished in the summer just passed. Mrs. G. N. Cherrington returned last night from a visit in Portland. Mrs. Carl Graves returned last night from a few days' visit with relatives in McMinnville.
