Starbuck, of Portland, visited over Sunday with his nephew, Dr.A. B. Starbuck. W. I. Eeynolds, principal of the State Reform School, is in Dallas for a short visit. Teats was up from Portland for an over Sunday visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Teats. The Holman property in Cooper Hollow, consisting of about 120 acres, has been platted out into 10 acre tracts and will be sold. License to wed was issued to George E. Thompson and Mrs. Lillie T. Miss Allie Fuller, who is teaching the Gooseneck school near Buell, was an over Sunday visitor at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Ful ler. Miss Hazel Jewett, of Eoseburg, was an over-Sunday guest at the home of her aunt, Mrs. B. Casey. Miss Jewett is attending the Monmouth Normal School this winter. S. B. Taylor was In Dallas overSun day from Eola, where he is superin tending the construction work on the right-of-way of the Salem, Falls City & Western Eailway Company. Sheriff J. M. Grant has just turned over to County Treasurer E. C. Dunn $12,057.62 on the last halt of the tax assessment of 1907, up to and includ ing the receipts of October 29. On account of the entertainment to be held at the Woodman Hall, Wed nesday night, the regular business meeting of the Eebekahs has been postponed until Thursday night. National Committeeman E. E, Wil liams and G. N. Cherrington, Secre tary of the Polk County Eepublican Committee, have gone to Portland to await the returns from the election. Aged Woman Passes Away. Mrs. Elizabeth Maxfleld died at her home in this city, Sunday, aged 78 years. Mrs. Maxfleld was born In Kentucky in 1830 and afterward moved to Indiana, where she resided until 18G4 when she crossed the plains to Oregon, settling near MoCoy. She afterward moved to Independence where she made her home until about three weeks ago when she came with her family to Dallas. Her husband died in Independence more than a year ago and she is survived by only her five children: Mrs. William Hunter, of Corvallis; Donald M., Samuel, May and Angle, of Dallas. The funeral was held yesterday and the remains were taken to Bethel for burial. Season of Hallowe'en Most Appro priately Celebrated by Merry Parties. Ballston Man Accidentally Shot. Rodney Bowman was accidentally shot by a 22-calibre rifle in the bands of Mrs. Bowman at his home near Ballston last week. Mr. and Mrs. Bowman had been out hunting and upon their return to the bouse Mrs. Bowman proceeded to clean the rifle, and while doing so, it was accidentally discharged, the bullet entering Mr. Bowman's leg above the knee, passing upward and through the leg, coming out at the thigh a foot above the point of entering. Surgical services were at once secured, the wound skillfully treated, and without the intervention of blood poisoning no serious injury will result. Sheridan Sun. The members of the Eutre Nous Club gave a most enjoyable Hallowe'en party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Guy, Friday night. The rooms were beautifully decorated with autumn leaves, while to keep up the spirit of the evening's entertaiment, lighted Jack-o-lanterns grinned jovially out or every nook and corner. The guests came dressed, as the invi tations bad demanded, in ghostly attire, and the evening was merrily spent In various games and fortune telling tricks characteristic of the Hallowe'en season, and a most deli cious luncheon was served. N. L. Guy, W. I. Ford, R. E. Williams, Harry Gaynor and R. R. Hill. Mrs. Nancy Putnam, of Salem, and Mrs. Emily Hagey, of Monmouth, are in Dallas visiting their sister, Mrs. M. F. Dri unen at the home of ber daughter, Mrs. M. D. Coulter. Moss Walker was down Irom Falls City on a business visit Friday. Mr. Walker and his partner, Cal Kramer, now have charge of The Tavern hotel and are runniDg it in connection with The Walker. Mrs. S. B. Tavlor and two children returned to their home in this city Friday from an extended stay near Eola, where Mr. Taylor is employed in the construction work of the Salem, Falls City & Western Railway. G. W. Pettit. recently appointed pastor of the Adventist Church in Dallas Will preach at the local church Friday and Saturday nights. The subjects will be "The Seventh Day Sabbath ;" "Is It Jewish or Christian?' All are cordially invited to attend. The whole bouse upstairs and down was elaborately decorated with ever green, autumn leaves and appropriate Hallowe'en symbols and the evening was spent In playing various Hallow e'en games. A delicious luncheon was served during the evening. The guests wore: Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Soehren, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kaerth, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Stafrin, Mrs. Tripp, Mrs. Martha Stafrin ; Misses Frankie Hayter, Nora Robert son, Effa Brown, Josephine Jacobson, Catherine Olin and Ella Pearson; Messrs. Fonso Manston, R. E. Wil liams, Julius Essig, Christy Stafrin, Fred Olin, Dean Collins and James Shaw. Body Not Recovered. All efforts of the crew of U. S. dredge Mathloma, have so far failed to recover the body of Walter Thomas, who lost his life by drowning last Wednesday off the Mathloma In whicb J. A. Gwinn and Harley Ryan had a narrow escape from the same fate. The crew of the Mathloma dragged the river from Salem bar to Kaiser's Eapids, four milos below Salem, and Sunday they used a qnantity of dyna mite, but met with no success. The boy's father is still over at the scene, and with some of the boys from Salem, doing all in their power to aid the crew of the dredge In their efforts to locate the body of the unfortunate lad. Statesman. Highly Entertaining Lectures. The lectures of Dr. George Gilbert Bancroft given at the Woodman Hall, Friday and Saturday night were well attended and the Y. M. C. A. of Dallas College, under whose auspices the entertainments were held, cleared a handsome sum from the sale of tickets. All who were present at the ieeturcs speak highly in praise of Dr. Bancroft and bis work and, should be return to Dallas at some future date, he would doubtless be greeted by a larger bouse than ever before.
