What form is that which looms above The campaign combat here below, And rides upon the clouds of dust From that sedate imbroglio. And hollers "Victory!" although "f is far too soon for it to know? The cheerful incarnation, that, Of the hopefulness of a Democrat. What mystic hand Is that which glides Across the surface of the slates. And writes as "Democratic" all Those listed with the doubtful states. (And frequently attempts to graft A utxtH that's nil afnkprl nnr. hv TftfYi? The mystic hand that does ail that Is the hopefulness of the Democrat. TEA The cost of good tea is so very little : only a third of a cent a cup I a cent-and-a-half or two cents for the family breakfast I Your grocer returns your money if you Jon 'I like Scbillinir'R Best: we pay him. OUR NATIONAl TICKET. For President, William If. Taft, of Ohio. For Vice-President, James S. Sherman, of New York. Presidential Electors J. D. Lee, of Multnomah County. F. J. Miller, of Linn County. A. C. Marsters, of Douglas County. It. It. Butler, of Gilliam County. Three more days in which voters may register before the books are closed for the presidential election in November. If after that tirno there still remain any who through care lessness have neglected to perform that duty of citizenship, tbey scarcely deserve the consideration of the six freeholders' who would bo required to swear them in at the polls on election day. When a man deliberately sacri fices his right of voting, it is hardly fair tbatheshould come around ut the eleventh hour annoying others in an effort to overcome the results of his own neglect. An election day passed ballotloss, as far as he is concerned, might really have a bonefioial effect upon tho man who is "too busy" (or to Indolent) to register in duo season. What is the airy sprite that floats Through William Jennings revered dreams. And whispers of the prospect bright, Lntii a mortal cincn it seems. And William J. would almost swear He sits alreadv in The Chair? The tricksy sprite that does all that Is the noperulness or a jLemocrat. The gam's old hope that, in the past, Has whispered "Cinch!" into their ears And buoyed them serenely o'er The stern defeats of sixteen years, Still hollers "Victory ahead I" For should it cease the party's dead. What a persistent thing is that The hopefulness of a Democrat. L ENVOI Oh, let such hope be given to me. If e'er in straits extreme I be! Should, to my horrified inspection, rour trains anproacn rroin eacn direction. While o'er my head, aghast, I spy An airship dropping from the sky, And neatn my feet, resounds amain The rumble of a subway train, And someone drops, like smoking rocket. A hand grenade in my hip pocket, O still, kind Fortune grant me that I may hope on like a Democrat. BUSINESS LOCALS. Taft, Republican candi date for United States President, has mode the following frank, positive declaration : "If elected, I propose to devote all the ability that Is in me to the constructive work ot suggesting to Congress tho means by which the Roosevelt policies shall be clinched." Roosevelt and tho "Roosevelt policies" have been most unequivocally en dorsed by the American people, whose dearest wish, expressed In tho most unmistakable terms on a thousand occasions, has been to see tuoso poli cies "clinched" Bnd carried out to their logical end tho destruction of graft and corruption in all places, high and low, and the ultimate regen eration of Amorican business and political methods. In tha jierson of Mr. Taft, we have a man who has for Beveral years acted as an advisor and assistant to President Roosevelt In the prosecution of his crusade fur a "square deal, "a man whom Mr. Roose velt himself hns designated as the one best fitted to take up ami carry to its conclusion tho work that he began; and a man who has iwruonully expressed his Intention of working to that end with all his might, if the American people- see lit to entrust that mission to him. Dated 2.".th S'pteinttt-r A. D. Vm. C. S. (IKAVKS. Assessor of Polk County, Or. 9-85 6t Three normal schools will be sup ported in the state of Oregon despite the protest of Regent W. h. Ayro, of Portland, who still insists he will file a minority report objecting to so many schools. At a meeting of the board of regents held Mouday an echo of the old light over the number of normals was heard In Ayro's insistency to con tinue his objection against the exist ence of so many schools, but he agreed to an appropriation of approximately $.'150,000 for the three institutions pro vided it is finally decided to conduct that many. Tho board made the following ap propriations ; Newdorinitory for each school $50, 000. Salaries for each school $13,000 General maintainenco for each school $1,000. Additional land $1,000. Expenses of board of trustees t,500. This makes a total budget of $339, 600. One of the most Important features of the meeting was a move to regulate the teaching system. A maximum of 21 teachers for each school was pro vided and salaries were adjusted to a minimum of $1,000 with the exception of salaries for presidents. Salaries for each school are limited to $20,000 a year which makes it apparently prohibitive to allow a full quota of 21 instructors even if each should work for tho mlmiinum stipu lated. Tho old difficulty in tho board of regents over the number of notmul schools arose last spring and simmered down to a proposition of four, three, two or one for the state. A split In tho hoard resulted in W. it. Ayre, of Port land, declaring he would file a minor ity report if more than two normal schools were retained by tho state and said his preference is one school. He reiterated his statement Mondav, but consented to the appropriations under protest. Tho balance of the hoard favors the three schools owing to the greatness of tho stato of Oregon and the Geo graphical divisions of mountain ranges making long trips expensive and difficult. Tho monthly report of the three Nor mal Schools shows the billowing attendance : Weston, ir I ; Monmouth, 108, and Ashland, 10o. Statesman. Men Wanted.
