Thursday, July 18, marks tbo open ing of the third annual Cherry Fair In Salem, and for three days the most perfect specimens of cherries that can be procured from the most fertile orchard regipns of Oregon will be on display in that city. Last year in the sward of prizes, a larger number of cups and medals were given to the men whose exhibits represented the fruit districts of Polk county, than were carried away by the representa tives of all of the other counties of Oregon combined. Even great Hood River was obliged to admit that her choicest displays ranked Inferior to the wonderful products of the "Blue Ribbon County" that were exhibited at that time. This year the fruit growers of every district in Polk county where cherries are raised, report a yield equal to, in every respect and in many points surpassing, that of last year. Polk county may then reasonably hope for a repetition of those former successes which have added so materially each year to the growing list of trophies that have earned for her the title of "The Blue Ribbon County," and. as the various fruit growers within ber borders leave for Salem this week with their choicest exhibits, the loyal citizens of Polk county will join In unanimously wish ing their representatives "Good luckl" . Williams Denies Rumor of His Proposed Election For State Chairman. Today's Oregon Ian throws new light on the report lately current that W. M. Cake was to be succeeded chairman of the State Republican Committee by R. E. Williams, of this city. On this subject it says: "W. M. Cake will not resign, neither is he to be ousted as chairman of the Republican state central committee. He will continue In his present post tion as official bead of the party organization in this stute and will personally conduct the Taft campaign in Oregon. "This is the true situation as is well understood among the party leaders. Thev have always questioned the advisability of any move to displace the state chairman at the beginning of the Presidential campaign when complete harmony within the party is desired. " 'There never has been any idea on the part of the members of the state central committee to effect a change in Its organization,' said Ralph E. Williams, of Dallas, committeeman for Polk County and National com mitteeman for Oregon, at the Imperial Hotel, last night. 'This talk of my being elected as successor to Mr. Cake has been altogether without founda tion and without my knowledge. The mem bets of the committee are all satisfied with Mr. Cuke as chairman and are resolved to make vigorous campaign in this state in the interest of Tuft and .Sherman nevet have been a caudidute for state chairman and would not have accepted the office bad it been tendered to me at any time, for the reason that as National committeeman I have not the time to give to the work involved in the chairmanship of the state organization.' Mr. Williams came to Portland to confer with Chairman Cuke in n response to telegrams each has received from National Chairman Frank H. Hitchcock, who has culled conference of the National coin mltteemen and the chairmen of the state central committees to be held at Colorado Springs, July 2(1 and 21 Both Mr. Williams and Mr. Cake ex pect to attend this conference and will leave for the meeting place next Fri day. The telegram from Chairman Hitchcock was a formal one and failed to indicate the uature of the business to be considered. Kuowiug Mr. Hitchcock's remark able organizing ability,' said Mr. Wil liams lust night, 'there can be no question but the conference hus been culled to outline vigorous and effective campulgn work in every stnto in the Interest of tho Iteuublicun ticket.' Leaning against a wire fence dur ing the thunderstorm Sunday morn ing, S. M. Ray received a severe elec tric shock that paralyzed his limbs and rendered him speeebless for a short time. It is supposed that thei bolt of electricity struck the fence, and running along the wires conveyed the shock to bis body. He escaped unin jured from this unusual experience. Miss Jennie Muscott returned from short visit in Portland, Friday evening. Miss Ella Carpenter, who has been teaching school in Portland, returned home with ber, and will remain In Dallas during the summer. The irritatlng'substance was removed after a painful and tedious operation aDd it is hoped that Mr. Stump will soon recover from the accident. Ralph Hall, of Falls City, was tried In Justice Holman's court yesterday on the charge of assault and battery, the complaint being brought by Alex ander Lozo. It appeared that Hall had been called upon to assist the city marshal In arresting Lozo for dis orderly conduct. The prisoner resisted and Hall found it necessary to handle him rather roughly in taking him to jail. Immediately after his release, Lozo hastened to swear out a com plaint. After heuring the evidence Justice Holman dismissed tho case. BUSINESS LOCALS.
