Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, EDITOR AND PCBLI8HEH, Publiihed Semi-Weekly at 11.60 per Year. Strictly in Advance. Vntitiwi aonond-claas matter March 1. 1907, at the puatoHlce at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of Congress 01 March 3, I87B. DALLAS, OREGON, JUKI 26, 1908. 7" way to build up Dallas It to pat- ronize Dallas people. WILL BUILD STRONG SCHOOL Financial Backing of Dallas . College Will Be Doubled by Union of Churches, PAVING AND PROSPERITY. Eugeoe, we are Informed, will have seven in Ilea of paved streets, when contracts now under way are com pleted, and Eugene is growing at a remarkable rata under an impetus clven bv this and similar public im provements. Koseburg is proceeding as fast as tbe laws will permit to get Rome street paviDR under way. urants Pass, too. has brusned aside the rernon strances of property owners whose short sighted ness led tbem to oppose tbe improvement, ana nas taken steps to carry out a program for paved streets; while Mod ford has already let a contract for a considerable area of pavement on her principal streets. Ashland Tidings. And Dallas, too, should be among this bunch of "live ones." While crushed rock streets will be much bet ter than anything we have bad hereto. fore, the Observer desires to place itself on recoid right here and now by predicting that before three years have rolled around, the property-owners will be regretting that they did not insist on the smooth pavement instead of macadam. The first cost, it is true, would have been higher, but the dif ference will not seem so great when tbe people shall have finished paying for the crushed rock. And besides, when wedo getreadyto pave, e shall probably be able to save good money by turning the whole job over to those property-owners who have been claim ing that when tbe people are reudy for tbe smooth pavement It will only be necessary to roll a coating of cement over the mud and rock already down. H let us be patient. A news dispatch la Tuesday's Ore gon Ian says: "The Union Evangelical Ministerial Association of Portland held Its an n ual meeting Monday forenoon in the First English Church, East Sixth and Market streets, for election of officers and discussion of the action of the conferences of the two branches of the Evangelical Churches in this state on church federation. 'One ot the resolutions adopted by the Ministerial Association last year was that the Evangelical Association recognize the Dallas College, which is under the control of the United Evan gelical Church, and place n member on the board or trustees, ine con ference, while sanctioning the resolu tions, referred them to the commission appointed by the general conference for favorable action, The Impression gained ground that the conference was opposed to federation and final organic union. "At the meeting Monday, Rev. Theo Scbauer, now presiding elder for the Evangelical Association, assured the ministers present that the conference wan heartily in favor of union, but in view of the fact that tbe general con fere nee had appointed a commission to handle just such questions, tbe resolutions were referred to that com mission. He explained further that tbe conference got the impression that the United Evangelical conference only could elect a trustee of Dallas College." It Is the firm conviction of the offi cers of Dallas college that the ultimate union of the United Evangelical Church and Evangelical Association will be a matter of only a short time, and the union will have a moBt impor tant influence on tbe affairs of tbe college. The financial backing of the Institution will be almost doubled while it will also receive the additional patronage of tbe members of the Evan gelical Association. At Monday's mooting In Portland, the Kav. A. A. Winter was elected president of tbe Ministerial Associa tion, and the Rev. C. C. Poling, form erly president of Dallas College, was "The Mood Is The life." Science hu never gone beyond th above simple stau-m( nt of scripture. To you, who are naturally careful, it does not come high. .. " v It is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed. With gas or kerosene there Is the temptation to let light burn when no needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month. You can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money than electric light, but does it save you anything when It limits op portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes your walls mars decorations and increases household work. You could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals but it wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save, but how you save that counts. WILLAMETTE VALLEY CO.
