Thompson died by his own hand at his home in Salem, Wed nesday morning, shooting blmseli In the mouth with a 22-callbre rifle. Mr. Thompson was well known in Polk County having made his resi dence here for nearly 20 years. He was born in Surry County, North Carolina in 1826, and crossed the plains to California in 1852, settling at Eureka. From that that place he moved to Dallas in 1860 and in 1862 he married Miss Elizabeth Dyer. To this union were born six children. After serving two successful terms as Clerk of Polk County, he moved to Rickreall and afterward to Eola, where he resided until 1877. In the Spring of that year an epi- deralo of dlptherla swept the country, and five of his children succumbed to the dread disease. Feeling that he oould not bear to live In a place where fie had suffered so much sorrow, he moved to Salem. The death of his wife In 1838, followed by the death of his son, Dr. Hugh Thompson in 1899, left him almost alone in the world, and it Is thought that brooding over this fact, coupled with long sickness, resulted In a fit of despondency in which he ended bis own life. Short funeral services were held at his borne Wednesday evening, and the body was taken to Portland yesterday and cremated. More Cement Walk.
