In the contest yester day, he easily overcame the big . majority of 100 or 600 votes, and, as in the gubernatorial elections of 1902 and 1906, finished the race with votes to spare. The pronibitiomsts also carried the county "dry" by something over After that the county officers came the struggle, perfect order was pre served at all times throughout the day. Six o'clock, and the polls were closed. For three hours the people waited in nervous expectancy for the first returns, to gain some clue as to the real result of the election. A group of eager men composed In a lafge extent of the candidates whose names had been before the people for choice, crowded into the clerk's office at the Courthouse and waited with increas ing eagerness for the reports. At last, at about 9 :30, the news began to come, at first Incomplete and frag mentary and finally complete, as the the smaller precincts finished their counts and telephoned the results to j Dallas. Suver, McCoy, Douglas, Spring Valley, one after another the reports came Id, -and by midnight tbe count began to take definite shape, and the ultimate results of the election became momentarily moreevident. Call after call was received, and about 2 o'clock this morning the crowd began to dwindle away, the final result of the election being practically settled. Polk county had at last gone "dry," and Chamberlain would carry the greater portion of Its precincts by a fair majority. One of tbe striking features of the election was the total indifference of the voters as to the results on the nine teen constitutional amendments, which bad been so widely and eagerly discussed during the months preccd lng tbe election. When the returns from any precinct were sent in the first questions asked weie "wet or dry?" and "Cake or Chamberlain? It Is probable that the remainder of the Republican ticket is elected. Co ad and Sibley are running neck and neck for County Judge and the result will not be definitely known until tbe Falls City and Rock Creek returns have been sent In, The vote by precincts on prohibition In Polk County up to date Is as follows: for their share of interest, but seldom were returns offered on the nineteen amendments, and never were they asked for. The common sentiment seemed to be,"they cltn wait." The length of tbe ballot made the count very slow, and in the precincts where tbe heavier votes were polled, the count was not completed until late this forenoon, although the Judges and clerks worked almost with out Intermission from the time the polls were olosed until the count was finished. Electricity for - Lighting Is only expensive to people who are wasteful and careless. To you, who are naturally careful, it does not come high. It Is economical because It can be quickly turned oft wnen not needed. With gas or kerosene there is the temptation to let liRht burn when not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes the electric light bills amount to only one or two doiiara per month. You can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money than electric light, but does it save you anvtbing when it limits op portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes your walls mars decorations and increases household work.
