For beef production there are the Shorthorn, Hereford and Aberdeen An gnn cattle, which are moat generally knows. , Tbeee breeds bar been de vsloped especial jr for beef, and when ever a herd has mnch of the Wood of ither of these breeds In tt the type of food feeder Is generally found. Shorthorns are food lot and stall feeders. They make rapid sains and show fairly food dressinf percentage. Thay are a little Inclined to be legs? and upstanding, which Is against tbem. bat they are quick to adapt themaeires to say changes and enrlronmenta. The Hereford as meat producers hare sigh rank. These cattle bare soads marked lmprOTemeat wlthia tit last twenty-fire years. The breed is criticised for hartng an eiceas of throa tineas, dewlap and lark of derrf pment of ramp and hind quarter. The Hereford steer Is noted as as exediect gracing animal and In this respect has no equal. Herefords mature mnch anora rapidly than Shorthorns and are an orb ta faror for the prodortioa of the so csJled "baby beef." In the show ring the Aberdeen Asgos steer has made a remarkable record. Is'e other breed has made toe a rec ord ta winning the high honors at the Chirac tntsnitlsaisl Urm stock show. la bread has wan assay hosiers saily la ebamptoa fat steer classes, bet sen. In regard to profits, one farmer has sold forty lambs at J7-S5 per bead, wfaCs another breeder has obtained thirty two lambs from twenty-four ewes, and they bare netted elm an areraga of $10.06 apiece. What Beef Men Think of Silage. The success sttendlng the use of flags to the dairy business has created mack Interest among beef cattle men. Silage faraisbee a succulent food. which la quit essential to the dairy tow la keeping her dlgestire system In food condition The same will be found area for tbs beef animal. Twen ty poands of silage per day will supply all the bulk snd water needed In a fattening ration. The other roughage may consist of either long fodder or mixed hay. The economy of using ilage for fattening purposes Is well brought oat by Professor A. M. Boule f the Virginia station,. who has stated tb following conclusions: There wss a difference of from Z to A of a pound of grain per bead per 'day la faror of tli allugs fed cattle. They also, finished out better and In any dlserlmlnsUng market would cer tainly bring a better pries than the dry fed csttis. "Of tb three forms of roughage fed, fesnllag waa eaten with the greatest ssush, and there was absolutely no toss, wbsrsas with tbs storer the loss amounted to 13.5 per cent and with bay 4.18 per cent Where a targe number of animals are fed this would make a ansldarabls difference In the cost of raatoa, except that tb shredded storer an be utilised to advantage for bed lag." Ths Famous Scotch Beef. Scotch beef is not produced in any locx.:srj ee connoted to any one class of farmers, bet a produced on practi cally aS fanaa, large and small, with in the honndariea of Scotland. Tbe nnmser ef cattie fed by aa Individual Is not nsnaKy so large as in America and depends upon the amount of rongh- age and roots available. la former years many of tbe north ef Scotland cattie feeders ia fattening three-year-old and four-year-oid cattle fed nothing but straw and swedes. This method of feeding does not now pre van to tbe same extent as tbe tend ency on every hand la to market ani mals st sn earlier age, and grain and cak hare been added to the rations. Feed Value ef Soft Corn. A majority of our farmers hare to face the problem of how to most prof itably dispose of a crop of soft corn. If It is Terr soft, the ears will freeze up hard daring the winter and next spring will either be rotten or soared, in either case not verj valuable for feeding purposes. Several years sgo we had a little ex perience along this line. We fed tbe entire field to cattle in the form of shock corn. Before the hard freezes came on the bunch made as good gsins upon the soft ears as they did upon tbe fully matured ones. But when tbe cold weather came the ears froze up and became solid, and the steers ate only tbe fodder and the husks, tearing the ears, which could not be eaten. Of course the gains did not come. When tbe ears thawed out they had no food Talue. C. A. Waugh In National Stock man. Beef Cattle at a Profit. Good cattie can be fed at a profit and higher prices can be obtained for cot tonseed products, corn and hay by feeding the same to a good type of beef cattle than by selling In a cash market and at the same time the fer tilizer material may be retained on the farm to Increase the productiveness of the soil.
