For beef production there are the

Shorthorns are food lot and stall

The Hereford as meat producers

In the show ring the Aberdeen Asgos

What Beef Men Think of Silage.
The success sttendlng the use of

mack Interest among beef cattle men.

ty poands of silage per day will supply
all the bulk snd water needed In a
fattening ration. The other roughage
may consist of either long fodder or
mixed hay. The economy of using
ilage for fattening purposes Is well
brought oat by Professor A. M. Boule
f the Virginia station,. who has stated
tb following conclusions:
There wss a difference of from Z

Feed Value ef Soft Corn.
A majority of our farmers hare to
face the problem of how to most prof
itably dispose of a crop of soft corn.
If It is Terr soft, the ears will freeze
up hard daring the winter and next
spring will either be rotten or soared,
in either case not verj valuable for
feeding purposes.
Several years sgo we had a little ex
perience along this line. We fed tbe
entire field to cattle in the form of
shock corn. Before the hard freezes
came on the bunch made as good gsins
upon the soft ears as they did upon
tbe fully matured ones. But when tbe
cold weather came the ears froze up
and became solid, and the steers ate
only tbe fodder and the husks, tearing
the ears, which could not be eaten. Of
course the gains did not come. When
tbe ears thawed out they had no food

Beef Cattle at a Profit.
Good cattie can be fed at a profit and
higher prices can be obtained for cot
tonseed products, corn and hay by
feeding the same to a good type of
beef cattle than by selling In a cash
market and at the same time the fer
tilizer material may be retained on the
farm to Increase the productiveness of
the soil. A. Smith, Mlsslstippl.
