Having defeated every Oregon team with which it has played this season, the Dallas College basketball team is the undisputed champion of the state. The championship contest was settled In the game with the Multnomah team on the Dallas floor, Saturday evening, when the visiting team was defeated by the close score of 22 to 21. It was a lightning game from start to finish, and furnished rare entertain ment for the spectators. The Dallas men played in excellent form, and threw eight field baskets to their opponents' four. The work of Savery and Claude Shaw as guards was especially strong. The Multnomah boys put up a gallant fight, but took their defeat like true sportsmen. After the game the Dallas team entertained the visitors at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Coad. The people of Dallas are justly proud of the wonderful record made by their team this year. Claude Shaw, one of Dallas' strong men, has contracted the mumps, and it is feared that he will not be able to take part in the game with Sno homish for the Coast championship. If It is possible to play this game, announcement will be made in due time. Mr. Shaw is very ill and is con fined to bis bed. Arrested For Horse Stealing. All The AEIER'S (joliefuaiv - - SUPPORT THE LIBRARY Every Person in Dallas Should Attend Benefit Entertainment Friday Night. The Dallas Free Library is greatly in need of funds, having run behind on its expenses for the last few months. If the public does not rally to its sup port by patronizing the entertainment at the Colosseum rink next Friday evening, this worthy institution which contributes so much to the enjoyment and good of the community will be sadly crippled In its usefulness. There must . be fresh books and magazines all the while, and necessary equipment forthe care of them. The support which tbe city gives just about covers the salary of the Assistant Librarian and running expenses, so money for books must come mainly from efforts outside. The entertainment which is offered deserves most liberal patronage wholly on Its own merits. Mrs. McGuire's lecture-recital, "Echoes from Dixie Land," will be presented with a complete setting of Southern airs by Miss Beulah Cadwell, a well known singer of Portland. Mrs. McGuire's art and versatility are given wide sway in this production. She will present Dot only her amusing darkey dialect sketches, but will give Gielow's beautiful "Ode to the South," and Henry Grady's superb description of a Southern battlefield. The Oregonian says: "There are few rivals in Mrs. McGuire's class. Her charm is Indefinable as an impersonator and reader of negro dia lect. Her keen sense of humor is ever apparent, and with the grotesque situations which she so charmingly depicts, there is an invariable under current of tenderness and pathos." Secure your seats early for this splendid entertainment School Convention at Harmony. V v vi j CLOTHES M STORE Dallas, Oregon MANY YOUNG MEN ENLIST Eighty-Six Names Already Secured For Military Company in Dallas. That Dallas will soon have a com pany of state militia now seems assurred. At a meeting held In the courthouse last Thursday evening, in which a number of business men participated, the work of enlisting a company received enthusiastic en couragement and many names were added to the roll. The meeting was called to order by C. D. Chorpening, who has been active in organizing the company. Judge N. L. Butler was Invited to address the assembly, and he responded with a lengthy talk infused with loyal and patriotic feeling. He showed the utility of a military company, its good to tbe country at large, and its necessity because of the Monroe doc trine and the attitude of certain foreign nations toward tbe United States. Judge Butler's excellent talk was heartily appreciated by the young men, and he was frequently "inter rupted by enthusiastic applause. Hon. J. . Sibley, an old-time National Guardsmen, followed with a brief and interesting talk, in which he pointed out the good of a military company to its individual members. Judge J. L. Collins, a veteran of the Indian War, gave a brief address filled with only such patriotism as exists in the breasts of tbe older men who have fought for their country. F. H. Morrison, for many years a member of the United States Navy, spoke strongly in favor of tbe organi zation, and Dr. B. H. McCallon, Polk county's representative in the last Legislature, approved the movement and told of his support of the Armory appropriation bill. Chairman Chorpening then called for names, and a large number of young men went forward and. signed the roll, bringing tbe total up to 86 names. Another meeting will be held about April 8, at which time Adjutant Gen eral Finzer and other well-known military men are expected to be present.
