In reply to a query of recent date, that appeared Id your valuable columns, as to "who shall decide, when women disagree?" will you : kindly permit me to say that you will find no difficulty In answering that question for yourself In the ballot booth by simply obeying the Golden Rule. You have only to vote In the affirmative, just as you know the majority of women would gladly do for you, If conditions were reversed The "red-hot argument" against our liberties, of which you speak, Is a stale protest prepared in the East by a few wealthy and Idle women who occasionally grow weary of bridge whist and ping-pong their chief industry. The protest In question used to be mothered in Oregon by such heavy taxpaying women ae the Ladds, Corbetts, Fallings, Montgomorys, Ti 1 , , . . . nocuweiiB, ei ai., wnose names are conspicuously absent this year. For the many women readers of your newspaper whose hearts have aohed over Mrs. Wilbur's manifesto, I wish to say there Is no reason for worry. The very leading men of all parties in Oregon have financed, cir culated, signed and certified our inltlutlve potltlons, Inviting us to take our proper place beside thorn In that larger home, the Government, for which we supply all the soldiers at the peril of our lives. We accoptcd their Invitation by filing their petitions with our gentlemanly Secretary of State, and we are not afraid that any honorable voter will obey Mrs. Wil bur's mandate by voting "no." ABIGAIL HCOTT DUNIWAY. The Odhervkh believes that It voltes I the Sentiment of In run mntnrltv nf I r, . - - -v voters or Oregon In exproBHlng regret that It is not possible for the womon themselves to vote on equal suffrage Ana thus settle the question onuo for all. Whllotheextunslon of the voting privilege to women would do llttlo else than double the number of votes good, bad and Indifferent yet we believe the voters of the miisonllno per suasion would bo willing to grant the privileged they could bo made to know that the womon rosily desired It. Hut while many women areearnestly advo cutlng equal suffrugo, there are muny who are equally as earnest In tholr opposition to It, although these latter are not organized, and consequently are not making as much nolso about It. Every voter knows this to be a fact. You, for Instance, who aro read ing these lines: What does your wife think about the woman biiITihko amendment? Does alio want to vote? If she does, wo see. do reason why you should not give her a chance to ex press her sentlmeut by casting your ballot In accordance with her wishes on this amendment On the other hand, if she does nottleslrethe voting privilege, there would seem to be no reason why you should not act as her proxy and vote against it. To lha end that the womau suffrage question might be settled once for all to Oregon, we would all be glad If It were poirilbla for the women them selves to vote on the amendment; but as this cannot be done, it seems to us that the next best thing would be for each voter to cast his ballot according to trie desires of his wife, mother. later, or some other voter's sUter, ami thus give expression as nearly possible to the senlimeut of the women of Oregon on the question of equal unra At this time, when the terrible dis aster that occurred recently In the Col llogwood schoolbouse fire has set on foot anxious Investigations In nearly every city schoolbouse in the United States, the people of Dallas may feel justly proud of the discipline in their public school, which makes the occur rence of a similar catastrophe In this city practically Impossible. The practice of holding fire drills frequently and at such times as to take the children completely by sur prise, has been carried ou since the new schoolbouse was completed sev eral years ago, and the drill system has now become well Digh perfect in its working. A test made this morning by Directors Loughary and Coad proved this to be true In a most practical and convincing manner. The visiting party arrived at the schoolbouse at about 10 o clock when the morning's work was well under way. The halls were completely deserted and only the subdued hum of voices, or the moving of feet behind the closed doors of the recitation rooms told of the presence of a single soui in the big building. The visitors sta tioned themselves in one corner of the nan on the first floor, and as one of them took out his watch and prepared to time the drill, the janitor stepped to tno gong rope and gave it a series of short, quick strokes, filling the halls witn tne rapid clangor of the fire alarm. In an Instant the big building awoke to life. Issuing In double file and at double quick time from their recitation rooms, the children swung onto the broad stairways four abreast and so posseddown and out from the build ing. The movement was so rapid that the smaller children were prao- tlcally all out when the column from the upper rooms reached the first floor, and every pupil was safely on the sidewalk by the time the hand of the watch had registered a bure 60 seconds. A little lnd from Room 4 ran down In front of the line, and opened the big double doors and eight of the larger boys, delegated as flremon, had the hose In the second floor and In the bnsernent unreeled and ready for action before the pupils were all out of tho building. Basketball Team No Match For Swift Second Team of Dallas College. The basketball team from the Albina High School, claiming the Junior championshipof Oregon, gained little honor from its recent trip to this part of the Willamette Valley, beiog defeated two nights in succession last week by the Independence Athletic Club and the Dallas Second Team respectively. tne latter game was played on our local floor Saturday night, and the speedy collegejeam easily proved it self superior to the visiting aggroga- gation. scoring 31 points to their oppo nents 20. It would have been difficult to pick the star player from the local five, as each one did his part perfectly and left nothing to be desired either in the team work or on goal throwing. They use exactly the same style of play as that employed by the first team, and their fast and skillful work Saturday night showed that they were well able to play in a much faster class than that of the average high school aggre gation or j un ior cl u b team.
