C. HAYTER, EDITOR AND PUBLI8HER. Published Semi-Weekly at 11.30 per Year. Btrlctlj- in Advance. Entered .a aecond-clasa matter March 1, 1907, at the poat ottlce at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of Congreaa ol March 8, 1879. DALLAS, OREGON, MABCH6, 1908. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. H. M. CAKE WILL SPEAK x Republican Candidate for United States Senator Will Deliver Ad dress in Dallas. AS TO INNOCENT PURCHASERS. The lumbermen and mine owners will make a determined stand against that portion of Congressman Hawley's resolution which provides that those who have heretofore purchased land from the O. & O. Itailroad Company shall be Included In the suit to compel the forfeiture of the grant land. Hun dreds of sawmills la Oregon, includ ing three of the principal mills in Polk county, are running today on land purchased from the railroad company. None of these holders bought for speculative purposes, but on the contrary, bought to develop the lumber industry. The Polk County sawmill and the Cone mill above Falls City are built on railroad land. The Willamette Valley Lumber Company's big mill In Dallas could not exist long without It, nor could the Dallas Lumber Com pany, nor the Spauldlng Logging Company. It Is said that nearly 400 sawmills In Oregon would be put out of business by the enforcement of the terms of the Hawloy resolution. in any stops tno Government may take to oompel the railroad to sell Its grant lands, innocent purchasers noma not be Included. After the Government has knowingly looked on for 40 years and seen these mon invest ing their money in purchasing this land and developing It. no step should be taken at this late day to throw a cloud on Innocent purchasers' titles. Buoh a course would only result In irreparablelnjury tothoso purchasers, and would in no way benefit the people who are seeking to tllo upon the unsold portion of tho railroad grunt. Hon. H. M. Cake, a Repub lican candidate for the nomi nation for the office united states senator, and one of . Oregon's best known citizens, will open his cam paign in Polk county next Thursday night, when he will deliver an address in the Courthouse. Mr. Cake is logical and entertaining speaker, and his masterly presentation of important questions confronting the American people will prove of interest to everv voter. The address will begin at 8 p. m. The public is cordially invited. i Inquire Ramsey. Wood For Sale, at Backet Store. F. S, 2-18-8t Eggs For Sale. It must seem ref reshing to tho readers of that sleepy old sheet to get some real llvo stuff once In a while. Jim Hears Is still after former Secre tary of Htato Dunbar, and the case la now being threshed out In Judge uauoways court In BHlem. Sears conU-nds that Dunbar was entitled to oolleot no more than his constitutional salary while serving the state, and thut be should be compelled to turu over all foes to the stnto treasury. uunDsr is lighting to retain the fees, Olalmlngthat In putting them In his pocket be was clearly within his rights and was but following the precedent set by a long lino of Heere lanes before him. It Is said that Dunbar's attorneys are willing to stipulate that the fees amounted to V 40,000. Hears' attorneys believe that they amounted to oenrly twleo that sum. The outcome of tho ruse will be awaited with considerable Interest by the taxpayers. The new ruling of the PoHtoflloe Department which limits tho length of time a newspaper may be sent to a subscriber afur the expiration of the paid subscription, Is going to ptove popular with the reading public The Odsskvir mailed out statements of coouni Wednesday to all subscribers who were In arrears, and was kept busy all day yesterday writing receipts ror money. Dene subscribers. witnouia single exception, expressed weir hearty approval of the new plan ho rar we have not lost a subscription, ana judging from present Indication! It does not seem likely that we will In conducting a credit business, this paper always endeavored to use Judgment as to whose names were placed on the lint and whose were left off, and by so doing we have kept sub scription losses down to the nilnltnuui. If the now ruling of the Department Is satisfactory to the aubsorilwrs, t u certain that it will be welcomed by the publishers. Any business man would rather do business for cash than on a credit basis, even though his loae on bad debts be kept at the lowest notch. So It would appear that the Depart ment Is satisfied and the readeis and publishers aro satisfied a rasa of satisfaction all around. PROBATE.
