COURT HOUSE NOTES Items of Interest From the Records in the County Offices Briefly Told. PLAN INVITES DEFEAT. The little gang of would-be Republi can leaders in Oregon wboare seeking to evade the Direct Primary law should have sense enough to know that they are tampering with fire. The plan that is being formulated in several counties to bold conventions to "indorse" candidates for office is nothing in the world but a scheme to set tho provisions of the new primary law at naught, and these leaders know It. It is a dangerous and foolish movement one that If persisted in will ring the death knell of any chance of Republican success at the polls in June. It must bo remembered that the Republican party is responsible for the enactment of the Direct Primary law in uregon. True, tho measure was also advocated by the Democrats and Populists, but without Republican votes it never could have become a law. It should also be boruo In mind that the law is favored by a very large element of Republican voters who will vigorously resent any attempt to nul lify or evade a single one of its pro visions. It is a fact of tho deepest sign lfloance that tho voter who is in favor of tho Diroct Primary law belloves in It with nil his heart and soul, and, whother right or wrong, he will express theso convictions in a way that will leave no doubt as to his sincerity when ho cants his vole In Juuo, In the event that the would-be bosses defeat hl will in the primaries by tho proposed "conven tion" plan. In sounding this nolo of warning, tho OiiHKitVEit is actuated soh ly by u desire for Republican nCrr-HH at the coming election... AHour renders well know, this paper never favored the Direct Primary plan of uoniluatlriK offloors, and It does not favor it now. Hut wo are not willing to see the Republican party In Oregon commit suicldo merely to gratify our personal opinion. Party principles and party success should moan more than that lo evory individual. We respect the tins. nn t 1 t . . .. uuuuniy uuu sincerity or the men whoso views differ from ours, and we V.....t... .. It... .
