Use of One Kind.
An important fact iu connection with
good road making has been developed
by the office of public roads, says the
Washington Star. One of the most Im
portant matters In road building has
been the formation of a good top sur
face that will hold together well. It
has been found that by the proper
combination of common rocks It is
possible to get a much better wearing
surface than by the use of a single sort
of rock, and material that is very un
satisfactory when used alone may be
very valuable when used in combina
tion w ith something else. It has taken
a good tk'ttl of what "practical" tann
ers and some statesmen would call
"fancy science' to develop the facts.
It has beeu known for a long time
that granite or diabase, w hile a hard

rock, was difficult to bond under the
road roller and consequently a poor
surfacing material. But It was found
that by mixing limestone with it the
bonding value was greatly increased.
The practical application of this was
to treat the surface of the granite
roads with a top dressing of limestone
screenings. As shown by laboratory
tests, the granite alone had a bonding
value of six. The limestone alone had
a bonding value of twenty. Now, In
the scale of values anything as low as
ten is regarded as poor material.
Twenty is fair, forty Is good, and any
thing above fifty is excellent. It waa
found that when the limestone and the
granite were combined they had a ce
menting value of eighty-two. ' So the
value of the fact brought out is appar
ent.
The facts are brought out In a rather
technical report of Frofessor A. S.
Cushman and Prevost Hubbard of the
road office on "The Decomposition of
Feldspars." Wie report itself does not
make very Illuminating reading for the
layman, but the essential fact Is regard
ed as of great practical Importance.
Farmers Urge $6,000,000 For Roads.
At the farmers' institute held re
cently at Norristown, Pa., resolutions
were adopted asking the legislature to
make an additional appropriation of
$0,000,000 to the state highway depart
ment for new roads and favoring the
reappointment by Governor Elect Stu
art of A. L. Martin, a director of the
farmers' institute.

Because they objected to a negro car
rier and took down their mall boxes
residents along rural delivery route
No. 2, out of Cerulean, Ky., have been
deprived of the service, says a Louis
ville dispatch to the New York Trib
une. As a result farmers for miles are
calling at Cerulean for mall, and W.
L. George, the negro carrier, is out of
a job. Protests were sent to Wash
ington when George was first appoint
ed last April. No heed was paid to
them. White patrons along the route
then took down their boxes. As the
rule3 forbid delivery except where
boxes are up, the negro carrier soon
had a sinecure. The mall fell off so
that Washington has discontinued the
route because of "lack of patronage."
Mrs. Hazelbaker, mail carrier on
route No. 3 in Linn county, Kan., was
kindly remembered New Year's day
by the patrons of that line, says the
Fleasanton (Kan.) Herald. She serves
fifteen farmers with mall, and each one
presented her with a bushel of corn
with which to feed her horses. The
gift was very acceptable and worthily
bestowed. Mrs. Hazelbaker, who is
one of the most energetic, hardwork
ing and industrious women in Linn
county and the only lady mail carrier

past, wet or dry, hot or cold, sunshine

of Lockport, N. Y., the other day and
