About Polk County observer. (Monmouth, Polk County, Or.) 1888-1927 | View Entire Issue (June 28, 1907)
Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, KDITOR AND PUBLISHKR Published Weekly and Semi - Weekly at $1.50 per Year. Strictly in Advance. DALLAS, OREGON, Junk 28, 1907. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas People. Between the rabid ooes who demand conviction In spite of everything, the equally rabid ones who are shouting for either an acquittal or a fight, and the cool-headed citizens who ask for a just decision, without fear and with out favor, the Haywood jury has doubtless found out what it feels like to get thoroughly in between the devil and the deep sea. The way fruit packers from other states have stepped in and begun to buy Oregon fruit at top prices puts it up to the Cannery Trust either to do likewise or pack no fruit this year. Willamette Valley fruit raisers need have no fear that prices on their pro ducts will be beaten down this year. On the contrary, highly profitable figures may be expected. SILVER ANNIVERSARY Closing of Normal's Twenty. Fifth Year Will Be Celebrated Tomorrow. The Quarter Centennial Anniversary of the Oregon State Normal School, to be held in Monmouth tomorrow, promises to be the crowning event of a highly successful and enjoyable commencement week. Theold gradu ates, among them many men promi nent in the affairs of the state, will assemble and take part in a program arranged in honor of the successful closing of the 25th year of the school. Among the speakers on the program are : President E. D. Ressler, Federal Judge C. E. Wolverton, Judge N. L. Butler, President P. L. Campbell, Judge George H. Burnett and Regent A. Noltner. A pleasing feature of the exercises will be the presentation of an oil painting or P. L. Campbell, for many years the efficient President of the school. The musical numbers will be of a high order of excellence. The State Normal isclosinga highly successful years work, and the interest and enthusiasm shown by the faculty, students, graduates and friends of the school promise still better days for Oregon's parent Normal. Notice to Teachers. All Polk county teachers attending the meetiog at Salem ten or more hours may make up their remaining timA At th school officers' meeting to h held in Dallas in November, 1907, H. C. SEYMOUR, Supt Polk County Schools The afternoon train from Dallas to Portland has been running a vest! bule car for some time and-Mr, Crocker, the conductor, says that if it is possible to secure them, these cars will soon be run on all passenger trains ou the Yamhill division. QUIET JUNE WEDDING Miss Esther Savage Becomes Bride ol Mr. Frank Fawk. the Fifty-eight dwelling houses have been built in Dallas since January 1 ten are now in process of construction strangers are coming to town every day, inquiring for houses and seeking places to locate ; the sawmills are ask ing vainly for more men;, every Incoming freight train brings a long line of empty cars, and every outgo ing train draws those cars away, loaded. All this, in language more eloquent than that of tongue or pen, tells of a sure and rapid growth. The Observer pays no attention to requests for sample copies sent in on postal cards. In 16 years of news paper experience, we have never re ceived a subscription from one of these postal card applicants. A man who is not sufficiently interested in Dallas and Polk county to send a sealed request for copies of the local papers, at the same time enclosing stamps for return postage, is entitled to no favors at the hands of the pub lishers. We are not sure that these penny postal card chaps are the kind of people Polk county want3, anyhow. Mr. Frank Fawk and Miss Esther Savage were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Winter, in Port land, Wednesday, the Rev. Winter pronouncing the ceremony. The wedding was a quiet affair, only a few friends of the young couple being present. The bride was hand somely gowned in white and carried a boquet of white carnations. After the ceremony, the bride and groom started on their wedding jour ney into British Columbia, speeded on their way by the good wishes of their assembled friends. Mrs. Fawk is a daughter of Mrs. Mary Savage, of this city, and was for many years a popular teacher in the schools of the county. She has many friends, by all of whom she is held in the highest esteem. Mr. Fawk is one of Polk county's progressive and prosperous farmers, and is a young man of ability and promise. In 1905 he creditably represented the county in the lower house of the Ore gon Legislature. After their return from their wed ding journey, Mr. and Mrs. Fawk will begin housekeeping on their large farm near Oak Grove. MAHLON GUY IS DEAD Old-Time Resident Passes His Home in Dallas, 82 Years.
