DALLAS, OREGON, Junk 28, 1907.
The way to build up Dallas is to pat
ronize Dallas People.
Between the rabid ooes who demand
conviction In spite of everything, the
equally rabid ones who are shouting
for either an acquittal or a fight, and
the cool-headed citizens who ask for a
just decision, without fear and with
out favor, the Haywood jury has
doubtless found out what it feels like
to get thoroughly in between the devil
and the deep sea.
The way fruit packers from other
states have stepped in and begun to
buy Oregon fruit at top prices puts it
up to the Cannery Trust either to
do likewise or pack no fruit this year.
Willamette Valley fruit raisers need
have no fear that prices on their pro
ducts will be beaten down this year.
On the contrary, highly profitable
figures may be expected.
SILVER ANNIVERSARY
Closing of Normal's Twenty. Fifth
Year Will Be Celebrated
Tomorrow.
The Quarter Centennial Anniversary
of the Oregon State Normal School, to
be held in Monmouth tomorrow,
promises to be the crowning event of
a highly successful and enjoyable
commencement week. Theold gradu
ates, among them many men promi
nent in the affairs of the state, will
assemble and take part in a program
arranged in honor of the successful
closing of the 25th year of the school.
Among the speakers on the program
are : President E. D. Ressler, Federal
Judge C. E. Wolverton, Judge N. L.
Butler, President P. L. Campbell,
Judge George H. Burnett and Regent
A. Noltner. A pleasing feature of the
exercises will be the presentation of
an oil painting or P. L. Campbell, for
many years the efficient President of
the school. The musical numbers
will be of a high order of excellence.
The State Normal isclosinga highly
successful years work, and the interest
and enthusiasm shown by the faculty,
students, graduates and friends of the
school promise still better days for
Oregon's parent Normal.

tells of a sure and rapid growth.
The Observer pays no attention to
requests for sample copies sent in on
postal cards. In 16 years of news
paper experience, we have never re
ceived a subscription from one of
these postal card applicants. A man
who is not sufficiently interested in
Dallas and Polk county to send a
sealed request for copies of the local
papers, at the same time enclosing
stamps for return postage, is entitled
to no favors at the hands of the pub
lishers. We are not sure that these
penny postal card chaps are the kind
of people Polk county want3, anyhow.
Mr. Frank Fawk and Miss Esther
Savage were married at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Winter, in Port
land, Wednesday, the Rev. Winter
pronouncing the ceremony.
The wedding was a quiet affair,
only a few friends of the young couple
being present. The bride was hand
somely gowned in white and carried a
boquet of white carnations.
After the ceremony, the bride and
groom started on their wedding jour
ney into British Columbia, speeded on
their way by the good wishes of their
assembled friends.
Mrs. Fawk is a daughter of Mrs.
Mary Savage, of this city, and was
for many years a popular teacher in
the schools of the county. She has
many friends, by all of whom she is
held in the highest esteem. Mr. Fawk
is one of Polk county's progressive
and prosperous farmers, and is a
young man of ability and promise.
In 1905 he creditably represented the
county in the lower house of the Ore
gon Legislature.
After their return from their wed
ding journey, Mr. and Mrs. Fawk
will begin housekeeping on their
large farm near Oak Grove.

Mahlon Guy, an old and respected

several weeks.
Mr. Guy was born in Columbia

he married Cynthia Henry, who died
six years later. To this union were
born four children Elijah, Mary

first two named are now dead.
In 1857 he married Mary Crawford,
who survives him. Nine children
were born to this marriage William,
Maggie, George, Rosetta, Cynthia.
Harriett, Charles, Newton and Bertie.
The survivors are Maggie, Charles,
Newton and Bertie.
The family came to Oregon in 1875
and settled in Salem. A short time
afterward they moved to Dallas,
where they have since lived.
Mr. Guy was an honest, Industrious
man, and enjoyed the respect of all
who knew him. In his death, Polk
county loses a good citizen.
The funeral was held from the

No Balloon Ascension.
The only feature advertised on the
Dallas Fourth of July posters that
will not be on the program is
the balloon ascension. At the time
the posters were printed the com
mittee felt assured that they could
secure a balloonist for that day,
nut it nas since been learned tnat no
balloon can be had. Everything else,
such as the three brass bands, four
baseball teams, etc., have been en
gaged as advertised. I he money set
aside for the balloon ascension will be
spent for other first-class amuse
ments. Dallas is entertaining her
good friends and neighbors on this
occasion and desires to keep faith
with them by providing every attrac
tion advertised. Failing to secure a
balloon ascension, this word of expla
nation is due to those who are coming
to enjoy with us the biggest celebra
tion ever held in Polk county.
The ladies of the Baptist church
will serve ice cream on Mrs. Hallock's
lawn, July 3 and 4.
Rice Cook, of Portland, and Miss
Alma Jones, of Perrydale, were
married at the Hotel Gail, Wednesday,

John Campbell, a well known
farmer living near Ballston, died
Tuesday night at nine o'clock. Mr.
Campbell had been suffering for some
time from inflammation of the bowels,
and his death was not unexpected.

The best is Hood's Sarsaparilla. It
is the best because it does the most good.
While it makes the blood pure, fresh

Is only expensive to people who are

are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It is economical because it can be quickly turned oft wnen not needed
With gaa or kerosene there is the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars' per month
lou can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you anvthing when it limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes
your walls mars decorations and increases household work You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your 'meals
but it wouldn t be economy. It Is not so much what you save but
