Polk County Observer J. C. IIAYTER, EDITOR AND PUBLISHKR. Published Weekly and 8eml - Weekly at $1.50 per Year. Strictly In Advance. DALLAS, OREGON, J UNB 18, 1907. The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. The Brownsville Times, one of the best local newspapers in Oregon, cele brated its 18th birthday last Friday. Tortland wants Ave million roses for decorative purposes at her Rose Carnival. That will, as the poet says, be "going some," but Oregon is too much of a rose state to fail in satisfy ing the demand. Walter Lyon, a former publisher of the Independence West Side, has sold the Albany Herald to W. H. McDonald and Y. O. Freeman, of Sacramento, and will engage in mining. Mr. Lyon says he has "cast his lot with the people of Nevada, where oppor tunity points downward and says dig.' " . The snort of the iron horse will soon be heard in Tillamook, and before another year the richest country in the world without railroad facilities will be relieved from its bottled-up condition. The Pacific Railway & Navigation Company will unload a CO-ton engine and three miles of steel rails at Tillamook, between June 21 and 28, and the rails will be laid at once. This will be the first locomo tive in Tillamook County. The engine and steel will be taken to the harbor by vessel. Just keep it in mind that Dallas must have a cannery. It is too late to get the project under way this year, but it is not too late to begin talking in favor of this important and greatly needed industry. A certain amount of "wind-jamming" is necessary In getting any important enterprise started, and now is the time to talk cannery. The farmers want it and the business men want it, aud the union of these two forces is a combi nation that can accomplish any under taking. Talk for a cannery, early and late it will be time mighty well spent. That Dallas needs a well-equipped hospital is a fact conceded by all who have given the subject any consider ation. With three railroads centering here, and with the rapid increase of laboring men engaged in milliug, logging, and other hazardous occupa tions, the need of a hospital becomes more apparent every day. Thousands of dollars are sent out of Polk county each year to pay hospital fees, and the sick and injured are obliged to make long and wearisome railroad journeys to the cities, often at the risk of their lives. Dallas should have a flrst-cluss hospital, and the members of the medical profession are the ones who should take the lead in securing such an institution. The doctors may rest assured that In this work they will have the hearty co-operation of every citizen. R. D. Cooper, the well-known hop grower of Independence, tells the Portland Telegram that Oregon's hop crop will be about one-third short of last year. The total crop of 190G was 150,000 bales, but it cannot be expected to exceed 100,000 bales this year. This estimate was formed after a journey by team through the principal hop growing counties of the Willamette Valley. Mr. Cooper has had long experience in raising and handling hops, and any estimate formed by him is entitled to careful study; but there are many growers and dealers in Oregon who do not share his opinion that the crop this year will be short. It is argued that the new acreage of the large growers will In a measure cover any loss by indifferent cultivation on the part of the small farmers. Be that as it may, a heavy crop i3 not desired by the growers this year. The prospects for a profitable market have been anything but encouraging, and a light crop in the principal hop growing stateof the Union would mean just that much better price for the farmers next Fall. This is one of the years when a bumper crop is cot wanted. Watch for the big colored posters announcing Dallas' greatest Fourth of July celebration. NUMBER THE HOUSES. The Observer begs to offer a sug gestion that it has long had in mind, and one which it believes would be for the betterment of Dallas, and that is that the names of the streets be dis played at each crossing and that all the houses in the city be numbered. Dallas is growing so rapidly, and spreading out over such a large terri tory that it is becoming a difficult matter to find the residence of a family unless one happens to know where It is located. The business houses should also be numbered for the sake of ap pearance and convenience. The need of this improvement is brought forcibly to miod every time we write tnat .air. ana aits. Jones have moved into the dwelling between the schoolhouse and the Smith cot tage," or that "An auction sale will be held In the vacant room cat-a-cor-nered across the street from the Brown building." How much better and more instructive it would be to be able to say that "Mr. and Mrs. Jones are now living at No. 148 Washington street," or that "Mr. So-and-so Is opening a new grocery stocK at jno. 240 Main street,"etc. With the streets properly numbered, it would no longer be necessary, in directing a stranger, to tell him to "Go out to the depot, cross the street, go south two blocks, cross the street, and then go diagonally across the square, and you will find your man living in a large white house, with three maple trees in front of it." You would simply direct him to No. 125 Maple Street, or what ever number it happened to be. This would be far easier for you, and would make a much better impression upon him. The expense of numbering the houses would be small, and we believe the improvement would be worth many times its cost. We hope that the City Council will, at least, give the mutter its attention and investigation. BUSINESS LOCALS. Dr. llaytor. Dentist. Office over Wilson's DrugStoi?. Dallas. Oregon.
