A farmer subscriber says the candi
dates' advertising before the primaries
was overdone. It will be hard to
make Jonathan Bourne, Willis Duni
way, and other successful candidates,
believe that statement. Advertising
is all right, either as a business-getter
or a vote-getter. The only trouble is,
some merchants and some candidates
don't do enough of it.
Walter L. Tooze, chairman of the
Republican congressional committee
of the First District of Oregon, has
issued a call for a meetini? of the
committee in Salem on Saturday, May
5, for the purpose of organization and
to discuss any and all matters con
nected with the present campaign.
Rubbernecks are having a hard
time of it in San Francisco. Three!
prominent business men of Oregon,
while viewing the ruins a few days
ago, were forced to go to work with
gangs engaged in cleaning up the
city. The military authorities arei
putting every able-bodied man at
work, and no excuses are taken.
MR. BOURNE WINS.
The nomination of Jonathan Bourne
for United States Senator was the big
surprise of the primary election.
Early returns gave H. M. Cake a lead
of over 1000 votes and It was believed
by all that this lead could not be over
come. For three days Mr. Cake had
been receiving teletrrams of con
gratulation from his friends in Ore
gon, and the news was sent to all
parts of the United States that Cake
had won the nomination. Mr. Bourne,
himself, had conceded his defeat and
had given Mr. Cake assurances of his
hearty support. The late returns
which gave the nomination to Bourne
therefore came as a surprise to every
voter In the state.
The Observer was a supporter of
Mr. Cake, and used every honorable
means to secure his nomination. It
favored Mr. Cake because it believed
him to be the most suitable candidate
for the office. But Mr. Bourne is the
nominee of the Republican party, and,
as such, is entitled to Republican sup
port. Senator Gearin stands for
Democratio principles; Mr. Bourne
stands for Republican principles;
therefore, the Ouserveu will take
pleasure In supporting Mr. Bourne.
As our readers are aware, the Ob
berver has never favored the Direct
Primary Law; neither has it favored
Statement No. 1. But the present time
is not the proper time for a discussion
of these measures. The people have
expressed their wishes at the polls,
and the candidates chosen by the Re
publican voters are entitled to Repub
lican support at the June election.
Mr. Bourne has conducted a vigorous
and skillful campaign, and has
amply demonstrated his ability to
accomplish what he undertakes. The
result of this energy and efficiency in
Washington would bo felt for the
great good of Oregon, and the poople
would have the satisfaction of know
ing that their interests would not
bo neglected.
The Dominations for state officers
are highly pleasing to ttie Observer.
All the candidates are men of high
integrity and ability, and the business
affairs of the state will bo safe in their
hands. The ticket Is well distributed
geographically, and every candidate i
is worthy of the support of his party
Likewise, the Republican nominees
for the offices in Polk county are en
titled to unanimous party support.
The Observer hopes, and believes,
that the Republican ticket will bo
elected to a man.
It will be noticed that on his journey
from Seattle to Waldport, Holy Roller
Crei'fleld avoided Corvallis as he
would a pestilence. Evidently, he
has no hankering for a second coat of
tar and feathes.

D. G. Dove has purchased the Locke
drugstore and will continue the busi
ness. Warren Ferguson died at the home
of his mother, Wednesday, after a
lingering illness. The funeral will
be held Friday afternoon at the Bap
tist church. He left an aged mother,
brothers and a sister.
The people of this community have
responded liberally to the call for
help for the San Francisco sufferers.
Two carloads of provisions and sup
plies of various kinds were forwarded,
and it is believed that another car
will be secured. At a special meeting
of the city council, Tuesday evening,
250 was voted as a gift from the city,
About $700 in cash has been sub
scribed, making in nil about $1000,
including provisions.
Mrs. Susan Merwin died at her home
in Independence at 5 :45 o'clock Thurs
day morning, sne was sick only a
few hours before her death. She was
an Oregon pioneer, and was 85 year
old. She was born in Ohio, in Febru
ary 16, 1821, and was married to
Edwin Merwin in 1837. She was the
mother of 11 children, live of whom
are still living. Her son, Marsh Mer
win, is Postmaster at Independence,
The funeral services will be conducted
by Rev. E. J. Thompson at the home
at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
Burial will take place in the Odd
Fellows cemetery.
Miss Ethel Poling Becomes Bride of
Rev. duy F. Phelps, of
Portland.
A pretty wedding was solemnized at
the home of Dr. and Mrs. Charles C,
Poling, Tuesday, at noon, when their
daughter Ethel Viola, was given in
marriage to Rev. Guy F. Phelps, of
Portland. Bishop H. B. Hartzler, D. D.,
of Harrisburg, Pa., spoke the words
that made them husband and wife.
The parlor had been decorated by
Miss Josephine Armstrong and Miss
Rebecca Gates with Oregon grape,
ferns, and apple blossoms, and pre
sented a beautiful appearance. The
bride was prettily attired in Crepe de
Paris. After the ceremony, a dainty
lunch was served. The newly-married
couple left on the afternoon train for
Portland, where Rev. Phelps has
charge of a church.

through Benton was by private con
veyance from Airlie, Polk county, to

accompanied by his- wife. She was
divorced from him last year, but they
were re-married in Seattle several

contest between M. D. Ellis, U. L.
Frazer and I. A. Allen for the nomin
ation for Sheriff. Good feeling pre
vailed throughout the campaign, and
no personalities or abuse of any kind
wereindulged in. When early returns
gave strong Indications that Mr.
Frazer had defeated Mr. Ellis, the
latter accepted the apparent result with
rare good nature, and expressed him
self as anxious to do all in his power
