Polk County News 12A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • December 7, 2016 BIRTHS MI TOWN Kackley It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in MI Town with the Monmouth Garden Club Annual Greens Sale, followed by parades and the 49th annual tree lighting on the Western Oregon Univer- sity campus last Friday. What a treat to see the giant sequoia tree all decked out for the season and to enjoy music and laughter, and to see friends and family mem- bers gathered together at campus events. — When Santa arrived in In- dependence via train on Sat- urday afternoon to visit happy and excited kids of all ages, the saying, “It takes a village …” was reinforced even more because of the cooperation of local mer- chants and organizations. Chase Bar and Grill spon- sored Santa’s visit, FCR pro- vided candy; Arena Sports P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist Bar and Grill gave candy canes; the Independence Women’s Club served hot dogs; and Grove Communi- ty Church gave cups of wel- come hot chocolate. Thanks to Toys for Tots for the gifts provided to all children in attendance. The warm and happy feelings and kindness shown will keep us celebrat- ing the Christmas season all month long. — Companies are hiring, and the economy is improv- ing, but there are many indi- viduals and families in MI Town who need some assis- tance, especially this time of year when cold weather means higher utility bills and other expenses. Central High School students are co- ordinating with several local churches and the Independ- ence Elks Lodge to provide 250 local families with food baskets for Christmas din- ner, and could use dona- tions of money and time to help make good things hap- pen for those who need a lit- tle help. Those who would like to volunteer can come to the downstairs dining room at the Elks Lodge be- ginning at 9 a.m. on Dec. 21 to put food boxes together. For more information, please call 503-838-1850. The lodge is located at 289 S. Main St. in Independence. — How about taking a trip down Memory Lane without leaving MI Town. Enjoy the songs and stories at this beloved musical event. This evening through Saturday, Central High School pres- ents “White Christmas” at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Sat- urday at 2 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students with ID. Exceptions: the Sat- urday evening performance will include dinner for $20, and tonight’s opening ticket price for students is $3. Jeff Witt and Wendy Boyack co- direct an enthusiastic and talented cast. We’re looking forward to a good time. — There’s still time to partic- ipate in the Gingerbread House Contest at the Mon- mouth Public Library. Bring your decorated creation to the library by Saturday. All ages can enter, library pa- trons can vote on their fa- vorite house, and the winner will receive a prize. There were 20 of them, including Maiya’s parents, Charles and Virginia Martin. Pam and Elsie spent the night, then shopped at Fred Meyers’ Black Friday sale on the way home. Two weeks earlier they went to her sis- ter Kathy’s new house at Eagle Crest for the weekend. They had a relaxing week- end enjoying the sunshine, doing some shopping, and cooking on a new six-burn- er gas range. — This year’s Pedee Church children’s program will be “Room at the Inn,” and will be a part of the Christ- mas Eve service. Heidi Rus- sell and Heather Traglia are directing the play and the children are already practic- ing on Sundays and some Thursday evenings, so they should be well prepared. The Christmas Eve service will be at 7 p.m. and is a beautiful service with lots of Christmas songs and culmi- nating in a candle lighting ceremony. You’ll notice that Christmas Day is on a Sun- day this year, which is a meaningful time for the church service, which will be a Christmas celebration designed with the whole community in mind. — Last Wednesday, there was a limb down on the power lines on Pedee Creek Road between Fir Grove and Ronco Road. When it was discovered, the limb had al- ready started smoldering. Also last week, the electrici- ty went out after dark for a few hours, but thanks to the linemen at Consumer’s Power it was taken care of. — Bridgeport Chapel Choir will be presenting “A Noel Celebration — Sounds and Stories of Christmas” on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 18 at 10:40 a.m. 2017 WHO’S WHO IN POLK COUNTY FULL COLOR GUIDE RESERVE BEFORE To Businesses Serving POLK COUNTY Dec. 30th for only $ 132 Take this opportunity to tell Polk County your story!
