Polk County Living 10A Polk county itemizer-observer • November 9, 2016 BIRTHS MI TOWN Burbank The votes are in; the bal- lots have been counted; and elections workers all over the USA are most likely very relieved that yet anoth- er national election is over for the duration. There will no doubt be questions and concerns and perhaps re- counts here and there, but we can all take a deep breath and relax, knowing the robo-calls have ceased and the lawn signs will be picked up soon. We can now turn our attention to all of the good things hap- pening in our communities and get ready for the long winter nights ahead. — The Monmouth Senior Center would like to invite all veterans and their family members to a free breakfast this Friday (November 11), Veterans Day, from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. Because of P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist the ongoing construction at the center, the breakfast will be held in Volunteer Hall, located next door. This na- tional holiday was original- ly called Armistice Day, to signify the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th month of 1918. World War I was called “the war to end all wars,” and we know how that worked out. So many subsequent wars have occurred over the years, with brave men and women in uniform answer- ing the call of duty to help others in countries far away from our shores. We are grateful to those who have served our country during war and peacetime and it’s a pleasure to honor their commitment, sacrifices and dedication to making our world a better place. — Last week’s Itemizer-Ob- server featured an entire page to showcase upcom- ing Holiday Bazaars that are being held during No- vember and December all over Polk County, including several right here in MI Town. If you’re searching for all things celebrating autumn, Thanksgiving and Christmas, you’ll find just what you’re looking for without driving very far from home. Looks like it’s time to discover all the unique and original items handmade by our friends and neighbors, and find the perfect gifts for everyone on your list without spend- ing a fortune. Baked goods and homemade candies will be found at many events, as well as fresh C h r i s t m a s g re e n s a n d wreaths to welcome the holiday season. Sales at many events help provide funding for local charities and community assistance programs, which do good things for our communities. — John Brown and members of SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) are featured speakers at the Monmouth Senior Center’s November potluck sched- uled for Nov. 18 at noon, in Volunteer Hall. Please bring a side dish, rolls, or salad to go with a traditional turkey dinner, provided by the Friends of the Monmouth Senior Cen- ter. PEDEE NEWS Paul and Diane Telfer va- cationed with their daughter Amber, in Alberta, Canada, in October. They visited the Athabasca Glacier in the ice fields and hiked more than 30 miles in the Canadian Rockies near Lake Louise. They had beautiful fall weather for most of the week and ended with a wintry inch of snow on the ground. — Then Diane spent two weeks in North Carolina with the Red Cross helping with the Hurricane Matthew recovery, while Paul stayed home to speak at a men’s re- treat last weekend. We really A RLENE K OVASH Columnist don’t know how lucky we are not to have hurricanes, which are so devastating. — Chip and Linda North’s son Matt married Kate King in Salem on Oct. 29. Kate had recently completed a three-year mission in Aus- tralia, working with Youth With a Mission. The young couple are both considering their future career options while earning money for college. — Marge Robertson left for Brenda, Ariz., a few weeks ago, stopping in Montana on the way to visit her youngest grandson and his wife and new baby. Brenda is near Quartzsite, a winter haven for people all over the country who want to be warm. She loves it there and usually stays till April. — Paul and I have recorded our rainfall for the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University for several years now, and, can you be- lieve, we recorded 15.87 inches of rain for October! The Climate Center has vol- unteers in all 50 states and a couple of countries who have official rain gauges and report to the center’s website called CoCoRaHS.org (an acronym for Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network) daily. Look it up, as you may want to par- ticipate in this interesting and useful endeavor. — See you at the Pedee Women’s Club’s holiday fair this weekend. He weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 ¾ inches long. Zachary joins Annabelle, 4, and Jake, 3. His grandparents are Andrew and Jacqueline Liner, and Suzanne and Dave Burbank.
