Polk County Living Polk County itemizer-Observer • November 2, 2016 9A ANNIVERSARIES MI TOWN Every day, our mailboxes are overflowing and our fa- vorite television programs are interrupted with a con- stant barrage about which candidate is the lesser of two evils, and robo-calls are a daily occurrence. Signs have sprouted in most every lawn and along streets and highways. So many people are commenting about how they will be ever so relieved when this year’s election is over and what a pain in the neck (not to mention other places) all of this political stuff can be. — Be that as it may, voting is our golden opportunity to choose people who repre- sent our cities, our county, our state and our country — and it is a right and a privi- lege to be able to vote in this upcoming election, espe- 60th - Mulkey see in the checkout line at the grocery store, people you sit next to at our local restaurants. Find out what they have to say, and take the time to learn how they feel about the issues that are near and dear to your heart. Most of the candidates have websites where you can get even more information. If you don’t have a computer, our local libraries have them available for you to use. — Talk to your neighbors and friends about your views, and share ideas with others. Be gracious when other folks discuss their points of view and their feelings, and listen to what they have to say. You might learn something you didn’t know before. Encourage everyone to take part in this P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist cially this election where every day brings yet another round of “she said/he said” revelations, myth and folk- lore. There are ballot meas- ures that will affect our schools, funding for health care and seniors, among other things. — If you haven’t voted, you have several days to do so. Take the time to read about the issues and the candi- dates who are running for elective office. These candi- dates may be your friends and neighbors, the folks you very important civic duty. Show your kids that govern- ment really works for every- one by having information available and talking about the issues. — As Oregonians, we are fortunate to have a vote-by- mail system so we can take all the time we need to re- view the ballot and carefully make our choices without worrying about all those people standing in line. On the lighter side, we can sit in our comfy jammies with a cat in our lap, and a cup of coffee and a plate of scones on the table. It doesn’t get any better (or easier) than this. — Please remember to care- fully read your ballot and vote like your vote matters — because it really does. PEDEE NEWS Pedee’s youngest is in the news today. Dave and Suzanne Bur- bank were happy to wel- come new grandson Zachary Dylan into the world on Oct. 25. Parents Brennan and Callie Bur- bank are also delighted, as well as his older siblings, (almost) 5-year-old Annabelle and 3-year-old Jake, who all live in Inde- pendence. — Mercy Heller, month old daughter of Nic and Cas- sandra Heller, charmed her the rain, Bob and Lynda Schnekenburger took a three-day camping trip to the Redwoods in California last week. There were lots of road repairs being done be- cause of several landslides. They are enjoying their first great-grandchild, Ellie Marie, which means that daughter Chandra is now a grand- mother. She is loving it. — Sue’s sister Nancy was here from Seattle for a few days to visit so joined the neighbors at the Pedee Women’s Club’s monthly A RLENE K OVASH Columnist maternal grandparents, Paul and Polly Ramos, when they came from Omaha, Neb., to visit her at the end of October. Nic and Cassan- dra appreciated the visit and help, too. — In an effort to get out of community potluck, which is the last Wednesday of the month, at noon. All wel- come, of course. — Members of the Women’s Club are stepping up to make their favorite candies for the club’s holiday fair on Nov. 12, so it’s nice to know candy will still be available for sale then. They have quite a list of soups and pies scheduled to be served for lunch, also. Time of the fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so don’t miss it. (That’s an order.) CALL TODAY FOR A NO-CHARGE EVALUATION.
