By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer INDEPENDENCE — It was a mo- ment Falls City’s football program had waited 34 years to experience. At long last, the Mountaineers are headed back to the state playoffs. “I got teary eyed knowing that Falls City hadn’t made it in so long,” senior Jeremy Labrado said. Falls City defeated Yoncalla 78-30 in a Special District 3 playoff game on Fri- day to earn a spot in the 1A state playoffs. “We jumped out 32-8 and I thought, here we go,” coach Burgess Lar ic Cook said. “Then I think they must have decided to look around and wave at the parade before the parade got started and went flat for a little bit there, and we led 44- 16 at the half. I think we came out there in the second half, and I think we took over.” Austin Burgess scored five touch- downs and recorded an interception. Noah Sickles added three touch- downs, Jeremy Labrado added two scores and Dylan Young scored one touchdown. Lebanon may have taken the league title, but the loss doesn’t take too much shine off what is a good regular season for Dallas. Now eighth-ranked Dallas may have a lot more football left as the team goes into playoff mode, starting with a match up against Eagle Point Friday. “Our kids are pretty resilient, and one loss doesn’t level you,” Earhart coach Tracy Jackson said. “It’s disappoint- ing as hell, but last year, we were 3-6 and we are 7-2 right now. We have a lot that we have accomplished, and we believe we can win some games in the playoffs.” Dallas scored just 10 points Friday playing at home against a strong and fast Lebanon team that didn’t allow the Dragons to get its usually potent run game going. The team’s lone touch- down came on a pass to Tan- ner Earhart. “I’ll give Lebanon credit, they were a force tonight. Good for them,” Jackson said. “Football is a game of leverage, and we got out- leveraged. We’ve averages well over 300 rushing yards a game, and we couldn’t get jack going.” Senior safety and receiver Aaron White said a lack of concentration resulted in big plays for Lebanon. PREP SOCCER Panthers rally to defeat Thurston in play-in By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer INDEPENDENCE — Cen- tral’s boys soccer team trailed Thurston 1-0 at the half of its state play-in match on Saturday. Coach Joe Orozco had a simple question. “I asked them are you ready to go home or do you want to keep playing,” Oroz- co said. The Panthers responded with a clear answer. Lucas Muller tied the match, and Juan Ortiz scored the game-winner as Central earned a 2-1 victo- ry and advanced to the first round of the state playoffs. The Panthers spent much of the first half pressing — to the point of rushing pass- es. “I told them don’t rush into anything or pressure anything,” Orozco said. “Let’s just play our game. Don’t play their game. Settle down, find the open spaces and get open and make it happen.” See CENTRAL, Page 12A Class 5A State Soccer Who: No. 13 Central (8-5-2 overall, 4-2-1 Mid-Willamette Conference) at No. 4 Hillsboro (10-2-2 overall, 6-1 Northwest Oregon Conference).
