Polk County Itemizer-Observer • August 24, 2016 3A Public works replaces aging bridge City council approved $100,000 supplemental budget transfer By Jolene Guzman The Itemizer-Observer DALLAS — The city was hoping it would hold out for another year, but the old bridge on Monmouth Cutoff Road in Dallas had other plans. Last week a crew from Polk County Public Works re- placed the aging bridge after a thorough inspection re- vealed the span’s condition was worse than originally thought. “There’s no way it was going to pass another bridge inspection, and we didn’t want to take the risk of having the state (require a weight limit),” said City Manager Ron Foggin at the Dallas City Council meet- ing on Aug. 15. The council approved a $100,000 supplemental budget transfer from the city’s contingency fund to pay for the work, which had already begun at that point. Foggin said the city was aware of issues with the bridge since an inspection last year, but had planned to have the work done during the 2017-18 fiscal year. Another solution was to place a weight limit on the bridge, but that would have restricted truck traffic on a road that is a major trans- portation route. He said the bridge’s poor condition was due to age, not any other kind of dam- age. “It’s just old. It had over- lay, over overlay, over over- lay, so more weight’s been added through the years,” Foggin said. The job is estimated to cost between $85,000 to $100,000, but the city hopes actual costs comes in lower, Foggin said. The stretch was then repaved, closing down one lane at a time. JOLENE GUZMAN/ Itemizer-Observer A Polk County public works crew continues replacing the bridge on Monmouth Cutoff Road.
