Polk County Sports 12A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • March 30, 2016 Junior: Focus now on footwork Continued from Page 10A The mark was his best by far, but fell just short of what he was aiming for. He finished fourth — one spot away from quali- fying for state — and was 6 inches short from reaching the automatic state quali- fying mark, Masei said. Coming so close to state has only served to fuel his competitive fire as Broad- us has his eyes set on get- ting to Eugene. “I really want to get to state,” Broadus said. “It’d be fun. I feel like I can this year. I got beat on the last throw of last year, otherwise I would have been third.” His secret weapon won’t be quite so secret once peo- ple get a look at him while he throws. “Our emphasis this year is to work on his approach,” Masei said. “Last year, he just kind of ran and chucked it. He got to a point where he could throw it far, but he didn’t look super graceful doing it.” The footwork will be the key that Masei said will help put Broadus into the confer- ence’s upper echelon of javelin throwers. “I think people will be surprised with how fluid he looks with his cross over and his plant,” Masei said. “He’ll look like a javelin thrower. I’m expecting him to have a big year this year.” That includes compet- ing with Lebanon seniors John Bates and Zack Short — the top two finishers in the MWC district meet — and South Albany senior Kyle Thompson, the third- place finisher from a year ago. “Javelin is loaded this year,” Masei said. “But I ex- pect Harry to throw farther and compete with those three, definitely.” He’ll also face stiff compe- tition from his teammates, especially from Jake Ronco and Mitchell Laizure. “Those three kids, one day Harry will beat them, one day Jake can and one day Mitchell can,” Masei said. “They feed off each other because they all want to beat each other. Those three guys are going to be money for us.” Broadus may not have planned to join the track and field team, but it’s be- come an integral part of his spring schedule. “It’s the life of an athlete,” Broadus said. “You have sports all the time. There’s no stop to it. … I like to come out here and show what I can do as an individ- ual.” ing. Requests for hearing need to clearly identify the air quality concerns about the draft per- mit. Requests for hearing must be in writing and must be re- ceived by May 5, 2016. The Department will review all information received during the public review period. Fol- lowing this review, the permit may be modified. The proposed permit will then be forwarded to EPA for comment prior to is- suance. parties. All persons wishing to testify must sign in and be rec- ognized by the Chair. Written comments submitted to the Community Development Department by April 4, 2016 will be included with the staff re- port. Written comments submit- ted after that date will be for- warded to the Planning Com- mission at the public hearing. The staff report will be available for inspection at the Communi- ty Development Department at least seven days prior to the hearing. Copies of the staff re- port, the application, and all documents and evidence sub- mitted by or on behalf of the ap- plicant, and copies of the appli- cable criteria are available for inspection at the Community Development Department at no cost and copies will be provid- ed at a reasonable cost. Failure of an issue to be raised in a hearing, in person or by letter, or failure to provide statements or evidence suffi- cient to afford the decision maker an opportunity to re- spond to the issue precludes appeal to the Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) based on that issue.
