The event is from noon to 1 p.m. at Monmouth Public Library, 168 Ecols St. S., in Monmouth. For more information: www.micc-or.org COMMUNITY CALENDAR WOU symphony concert Wednesday Western Oregon Universi- ty symphony winter con- cert, “It don’t mean a thing if you can’t make it sing,” will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (today) at Rice Auditorium on campus. Admission is $3. Students and seniors are $1. WOU students and faculty get in free with ID. The symphony, directed by Ike Nail, will present a program of music that is mostly from singing, about singing or just sounds singable. The program lasts about an hour. For more information: 503-838-8275. WOU percussion ensemble performs Western Oregon Percus- sion ensemble will present its winter concert “Land- scapes” Thursday at WOU. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at WOU Rice Auditori- um under the direction of Ike Nail. The program in- cludes classic and modern works for percussion depict- ing through music land- scapes like the ocean and Alaskan Wilderness. The performance will be followed by Western Oregon Winds at 8 p.m., featuring music that is “narrative or evocative.” Admission is $3. Students and seniors are $1. Funk, Fusion & Freedom concert Western Hemisphere Or- chestra will perform a groovy program of American “funky music” at Rice Audi- torium Friday at 7:30 p.m. The repertoire primarily consists of original arrange- ments by interim director, Dan Gaynor, presenting works of composers includ- ing Professor Longhair, Chick Corea, Michael Jack- son and Kenny Garrett. For more information: 503-623-0809. ‘Open Heart’ talk at St. Thomas St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Dallas, 1486 SW Levens St., will host “A Queer Dialogue: Speaking & Lis- tening with an Open Heart” Sunday at 6 p.m. Sacred music by lesbian and gay composers will be performed, featuring mezzo soprano Rebecca Fromherz. After the performance, Dana Schowalter will speak on “The Importance of Speak- i n g O u t .” Fo l l ow i n g Schowalter, the church’s LGBT guests and allies are invited to “Believe OutLoud Coming Out Party.” The New Horizons Willamette Valley Orchestra will host a free concert Mon- day at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 320 SE Fir Villa Road, Dallas. Under the direction of conductor Allie Greenwell, the orchestra will perform to the theme: “Music Around the World.” New Horizons is for musi- cians of all levels with no au- d i t i o n s n e c e s s a r y. Curves food drive kicks off Monday Curves of Independence will begin its annual food drive Monday and it will run through March 25. Donations will be accept- ed at the Curves location, 155 C St., Independence and all food given will benefit local families. Local students to stage play Tuesday T h e Nu r s e r y R h y m e Brigade, a group of Dallas Community School stu- dents, will perform “Fairy Tales: Tairy Fales: Folklore Gone Awry” by local play- wright Marian Scadden Tuesday at Dallas Public Li- brary. The play will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the library, 950 Main St. During the performance, actors will act out well- known and not-so-well- known nursery rhymes, which includes songs and audience participation. WOU hosts speaker on death penalty Dale Recinella, Florida’s death row chaplain, will speak about the death penalty at Western Oregon University on March 16 at 5 p.m. Recinella is the author of “The Biblical Truth About The American Death Penal- ty” and will also speak in Portland, Eugene, Roseburg and Salem.
