be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday

The symphony, directed
by Ike Nail, will present a
program of music that is
mostly from singing, about
singing or just sounds
singable.

ensemble performs
Western Oregon Percus-
sion ensemble will present
its winter concert “Land-
scapes” Thursday at WOU.
The concert begins at 7
p.m. at WOU Rice Auditori-
um under the direction of
Ike Nail. The program in-
cludes classic and modern
works for percussion depict-
ing through music land-
scapes like the ocean and
Alaskan Wilderness.
The performance will be
followed by Western Oregon
Winds at 8 p.m., featuring
music that is “narrative or
evocative.”

Freedom concert
Western Hemisphere Or-
chestra will perform a
groovy program of American
“funky music” at Rice Audi-
torium Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The repertoire primarily
consists of original arrange-
ments by interim director,
Dan Gaynor, presenting
works of composers includ-
ing Professor Longhair,
Chick Corea, Michael Jack-
son and Kenny Garrett.

Willamette Valley Orchestra

Curves food drive
kicks off Monday
Curves of Independence
will begin its annual food
drive Monday and it will run
through March 25.
Donations will be accept-
ed at the Curves location,
155 C St., Independence and
all food given will benefit
local families.
The food drive is a part-
nership between Curves and
Marion Polk Food Share.

stage play Tuesday

Tales: Tairy Fales: Folklore
Gone Awry” by local play-

The play will begin at 3:30

actors will act out well-
known and not-so-well-
known nursery rhymes,
which includes songs and
audience participation.

on death penalty
Dale Recinella, Florida’s
death row chaplain, will
speak about the death
penalty at Western Oregon
University on March 16 at 5
p.m. Recinella is the author
of “The Biblical Truth About
The American Death Penal-
ty” and will also speak in
Portland, Eugene, Roseburg
and Salem.
The event, which will be
held at the Werner Universi-
