Polk County Education Polk County Itemizer-Observer • November 11, 2015 15A TMS students donate food to Ella Curran Class competitions, car wash nets more than 2,000 pounds for food bank By Emily Mentzer The Itemizer-Observer INDEPENDENCE — Stu- dents in Aaron Currier’s class at Talmadge Middle School got a big surprise while raising food for the Ella Curran Food Bank. Students hosted a canned-food car wash when a fire truck drove by. Ryan Duncan said he was one of the students on the sidewalk with signs advertising the deal when the truck turned around and came back. “We sprinted back to help,” he said. “Everybody helped wash that one.” The fire truck took more than 10 minutes to scrub down, and actually got washed twice so everyone could have a hand in it, Cur- rier said. “We washed over 90 cars,” said Daisy Biggs, student project leader for the food drive. Biggs noted that washing the fire truck “was, like, the best experience of my life.” It may have been trumped by the look on food bank volunteer Pat Jaffer’s face when Daisy broke the exciting news that students at Talmadge had raised 2,036 pounds of food. “This is great, the very best (student food drive) we’ve ever had,” Jaffer said. “You did a marvelous job.” Students unloaded the donations on Thursday, box after box filled with canned food and bags of grain. Currier said the class is an elective, back for the first time in two or three years. “Students are encouraged to choose their own projects to benefit the community,” Currier said “As a class, we also choose a big project to work on. The students chose the Cougar Canned-Food Car Wash.” Jaffer was invited to the class to speak about what she does at the food bank, and the role the organiza- tion plays in the community. “The kids were really in- spired because they got to meet her,” Currier said. “We EMILY MENTZER/ Itemizer-Observer Students in Aaron Currier’s class at Talmadge Middle School collected 2,036 pounds of food for the Ella Curran Food Bank. They held a dance, where snack items were traded for canned food donations. They organized a schoolwide canned food drive, with prizes for the classroom that raised the most, as well as for the grade level that raised the most. Along the way, individual efforts made for big changes in students. Biggs recalled going all over town and asking for do- nations. One man left her three boxes of food. Jade Gil spent two and a half hours raking leaves in her neighborhood and Oliver: Show opens tonight Continued from 16A Also, they’re excited to play on the bigger stage in Bollman Auditorium with more impressive sets and costumes. “It’s been really good for us,” Cromwell said. “It’s ac- complished what we had hoped it would accom- plish.” Seventh-grader Wyatt Button, who plays lead character Oliver, said being part of the cast means higher expectations of pro- fessionalism and organiza- tion, a challenge he wel- comes. His role, playing the melancholy, yet hopeful Oliver, has been a new ex- perience, too. “I never had to be sad before, at all,” Button said. “I put on my sad face and sometimes I think of a re- ally sad thing and that sets the tone.” Oliver — he is the one who asked for more supper after all — has an irrepress- ible spirit. “I think he always has hope,” Button said. That’s in spite of his cir- cumstances, which begin with life in an orphanage. His “May I have some more?” stunt leads to him being sold to a work house, where he eventually runs away. He lands with a gang of young thieves. Along the way, he en- counters a number of char- acters with bad intent, not the least of which is Bill Sykes, a sort of “mob boss,” taking the proceeds of the Show time! Zac Parnell, a senior who plays the intimidating Sykes, said most antago- nists have redeeming qual- ities, but Sykes is different. “With him, it’s tough to find one,” Parnell said. He’s abusive to his girl- friend, Nancy — and every- one else, really — and takes what he wants when he wants it. “It’s a different perspec- tive than playing a protago- nist,” Parnell said. “I have to take a couple of mo- ments to try to find some of that anger.” Amelia Poston, who plays Nancy, said it’s Oliv- er’s knack for staying opti- mistic in the face of the likes of Bill Sykes and “hor- rible” things that happen to him that makes the musi- cal uplifting. “It’s London in the 1800s, it wasn’t a happy time,” she said. “He’s so sweet, and in- stead of turning out horri- ble, he stays sweet.” Call us.
