The gentleman are in the livery business up to their ears, and say they don't want to hide their light under a half bushel when there is a good newspaper in town. W. C. Neas who has been afflicted a long time with a cancer, came up from Eugene Thursday with Dr C. Billington of that city. The doctor had the cancer taken from Mr. Neas’ face in a bottle, end it with a number of cancers taken from other persons, were horrible to look at. Mr. Neas would soon have been past being cured and feels quite fortunate over his recovery. Monday tbe editor of the E ch o - had the pleasure of seeing at ths residence of S. T. Nelson, near town, some of ns pretty Poland China pigs as ever seen in the East ern states. Mr. Nelson has two sows a id a male— all Poland Chinas from registered stock, that he procured East about one year ago, at a heavy expense. The ex press charges on the pigs amounted to almost $50. It costs something to start at the bottom for good hogs, but tbe pay is good for any one who will start right, and keep right along in that line. It costs more to make 100 pounds of pork out of a scrub than it does to make it out of a good thoroughbred, by about half. Thoroughbred pigs tbat can be butchered at eight and ten months old, give the owners some satisfaction in quick returns for labor and attention. When a man undertakes to make pork out of a bog so slim tbat he has to tie knots in its tail to keep it from slid ing through the cracks of his neigh bors fence far enough to capture tbe third row of corn growing in the field, you can be quite sure that man will never go into the banking busiuess with the profits he makes raising hogs. We are glad Mr. Nelson has the nerve and enterprise to invest in thoroughbred pigs that will pay him a large profit for his labor in raising them. It takes quite a long time to get a good start in raising good hogs and a man cannot under take it unless he expects to s.tay with it. A first class thoroughbred sow is worth more to a man who who cultivates the soil for a living, than a good horse or cow. But a man should have the best and see that he knows how to manage them.
