race was also run. The race was
between Red Bird, owned by Mc­
Kinney of Cottage Grove and Bay
Dick, owned by Gillcress of Cres-
well. It was a 600-yard dash aud

was a horse.
Considerable time was lost in pre­
paring for the foot race and it was
not run until about half past four
o’clock. The excitement was in­
tense when the sprinters appeared
on the track aod when the result
was known the cheering became
terriffic. Whitney won in a 100-
yards run by about a foot and a
half, and it was the Cottage Grove-
ites who were making most of the
noise. The result was a complete
surprise to the Eugeueitcs, as they
were confident “ Whiskers’’ would
win the race and had done some
