Merits o f Avcuarius Carbolineum Kecoguized by National, Klnto and Municipal Govern ments. of where the instigatiou for that aiiti foreign clause in these contracts came from, and Congress should see to it, not only that it is struck out, hut that individual responsibility fur it should be placed. Let the coun try have the name or names of the creature or creatures o f this greedy trust. T h e fame o f Avenarins Carbolineum ban steadily extended ns the only bona fide preserver of wood, since its discovery in Germany thirty years ngo. It has stood all tests of cliainnte soil and water nud steo lily lived down all pretended rivals. To day it is not only employed in all countries for the preservation of wood used for household nrticles articles such os bouses, barns, fences etc. but tbo natiouol government, .both of Europe and America, have recognized its value in saving public constructions from decay. F ollow in g their exnmple cities and counties have also adopted avenarius car- bolieum for bridges pavements etc, and the leading ship builders and railroad companies have shown their faith in its merits by treating ship timbers, cars, telegraph poles and ties with the same never failing preventative against climatic decay and repneious wood boring vermin both of land and water. Great bodies move slowly and act after mature deliberation. It may thereforo be safely stated that governments and corporations did n ot em ploy avenarías carbolineum until fully convinced of its money saving as well as wood preserving qualities. Private individuals desir ous of lengthening the life o f wood work and at the same time curtailing expenso, need not fear to follow the precedents established. With such examples before them it would appear that the indivi dual is foolish and the official almost cu lj able who does not protect his own or the taxpayer’ s pockets by using Ibis com pound thus saving from decay, and lengthening the life of all frame struelrues fo which ho is individually or officialy respon sible. Haying is nearing completion and the crop, as a whole, is an average one anil has been secured in excel lent condition. The second crop o f alfalfa is making satisfactory p ro gress. Cutworms have appeared in the clover fields in Clackamas, Marion, Linn and Curry counties, hut they are not nearly so numerous as they wore last year. The ranges are drying up, as is usual at this season of the year, but stock con tinues in excellent condition. The harvest of fall-sown grnin is becom ing general. Wheat, oats, ryo and barley in the Willamette valley con tinue doing well. The heads ore largo and well filled with plum p berries. In Eastern Oregon the prospects are not as favorable, as there is consiilerablo complaint of small heads with shrunken ' berries, and a good deal o f the frosted wheat in Union countv has been cut for hay. Spring wheat is generally very promising, but in many sec tions it needs rain. In Southern O iegou the protracted dry weather has been injurious to grain, nnd the yields there will he below the aver ago. Hops are generally free from lice and making satisfactory pro gress, although in some few sections the lateral vines are reported defi cient, which moans that there will he a corresponding shortage tn t! e yields. Corn, potatoes and gardens continue nmkiiig slow advancement, and sugar beets are promising, but all these crops, as a rule, would I e beuefittod by moro rain as well as by warmer weather. The cherry season is drawing to a close anil early peaches nud apples ore begin ning to ripen. When your piano needs tuning dout get Borne trump tuber to “ fix it” for you.
