Haying is nearing completion and
the crop, as a whole, is an average
one anil has been secured in excel­
lent condition. The second crop o f
alfalfa is making satisfactory p ro­
gress. Cutworms have appeared in

clover fields in Clackamas,
Marion, Linn and Curry counties,
hut they are not nearly so numerous
as they wore last year. The ranges
are drying up, as is usual at this
season of the year, but stock con­
tinues in excellent condition. The
harvest of fall-sown grnin is becom ­
ing general. Wheat, oats, ryo and
barley in the Willamette valley con­
tinue doing well. The heads ore
largo and well filled with plum p
berries. In Eastern Oregon the
prospects are not as favorable, as
there is consiilerablo complaint of
small heads with shrunken ' berries,
and a good deal o f the frosted
wheat in Union countv has been cut
for hay. Spring wheat is generally
very promising, but in many sec­
tions it needs rain. In Southern
O iegou the protracted dry weather
has been injurious to grain, nnd the
yields there will he below the aver
ago. Hops are generally free from
lice and making satisfactory pro­
gress, although in some few sections
the lateral vines are reported defi­
cient, which moans that there will
he a corresponding shortage tn t! e
yields. Corn, potatoes and gardens
continue nmkiiig slow advancement,
and sugar beets are promising, but
all these crops, as a rule, would I e
beuefittod by moro rain as well as
by warmer weather. The cherry
season is drawing to a close anil
