R E M A R K A B L E INTEL - T H E IM P O R T A N C E O F ROAD MARKINGS LARG EST Ip tT H t The Vancouver Island good roads eulhusiasts have followed the example set by the Pacific Hi lnvay Association in marking the main trunk line road running nor.lt and south ou Vancouver 1s- lau I, Britudi Columbia, in that the.- are aliout to mark this road with signs very similar to the Pa cific Highway with the exceptions of the name Island in place o f Pa cific and carry the crest of the V ic toria Automobile Association uu- der whose direction the work is to be done. 'I'he north and south road on the Island is now constructed from Victoria to Campbell River. With in the next year it is e x a c te d the provincial government will com plete this highway to the north end of the Island. The signs used are identical to the Pacific highway signs with the exception o f the wording. There is no question but that the road marking done under the di rectiou of the Pacific Highway A s sociation has stimulated highway construction on the Pacific coast as no other single movement has. It is hoped that local authorities or the state bodies will take up the matter of marking Pacific high way across the state o f California so that tourists who wish to travel north and south along the Pacific j coast states can readily do so with- j out any additional information other than that to be gotten from signs en route. W. Powers. The loganberry industry is a comparatively new thing, the berry being a cross be tween the red raspberry and the dewberry. “Where You Do Better.” A gen t These efficiency tests are con ducted throughout the year for the purpose of keeping train and en gineman on the alert. After a crew has run over the same line day after day without mishap, they, in common with other mortals, are likely to become careless and fail to observe * danger signal at a critical moment. Such an over sig h t is fraught with danger that makes one shudder to think of it— a hundred lives might be snuffed out in the twinkle of an eye, should j a train or enginemau fail to observe la signal. T o guard against such j a contingency the Southern Pacific Company has twenty-one efficiency ; tests, ranging from the changing lof the color of signal lights, and 'extinguishing lights entirely to placing fuses ami torpedoes on the | track. Failure to observe any of I these signals means most severe | discipline for the offender. Last ! year the Southern Pacific made ! 70’ 6 of these tests and only in forty-one cases did the crew fail to ¡observe the signal, giving a per I centage of ‘>0.42 percent perfect. It is possible that the animal could be sent out along the track alone and would be competent to report a light out altogether, or at least the wrong one burning. Then some bright genius tried drying them and found that they were even lielter than in the green state. Now the market for the dried fruit is treiiig developed and the dried product is a sample.
