G ITLS GROWING LESS MODEST.
T he rather am aziug assertion is
m ade by a New York teacher of
stage dancing that not only are
more a n y m o re girls with com fort­
able incomes seekiug opportunities
to exhibit their charm s in public,
b u t that their lack of modesty in
displaying« their physical perfec­
tions puts seasoned professionals
of their own sex to the blush.
“ Most of them are members of
well-to-do fam ilies,’’ the dancing
mistress said, “ and a great num ­
ber are society ladies with very,
aristocratic handles to their names.
W hen skirt dancing had such a
trem endous vogue a little tim e
back we had to engage extra in­
structors to cope with the work,
but that was a very m ild affair
in comparison with the present
craze to become classic dancers.
W hat am azes me about it all is the '
extraordinary lack of modesty j
among some of the modern young
ladies of good family. 1. often say

A Pleasant Hill parly was circu­
lating a recall petition in Cottage
(•rove Saturday, involving the
assessor and Lane county codrt,
hut he did not do a rushiug busi­
ness in this com m unity, where
most of the people are from Mis­
souri and have to be shown; in the
first place, that these co u n ty ‘ offic­
ials are really deserving of such
radical action by any. of their
official acts, and secondly, it they
were recalled th a t a better set of
men could or woifld be elected to
fill their respective places.
The
recall promoter who visited Cottage
d ro v e could not speak p lain E n g ­
lish, and did not impress us as
being a fair, unbiased an d compe­
tent judge of the ability aud
com petency of the Lane county as­
sessor and county court.
T he re­
call by its intim idating tendencies
is going to bring about a worse
condition than it was created to
remedy.

T he city engineer and council-
men believe the water pipe line
from L ang Creek will never carry
a full head of water unless it is
increased in size at the intake and
for some distance therefrom, to 20
or 24 inches which will incur an
expense of from SHOO to $1000.
At the present time the pipe line is
12 inches in diameter the entire
distance and it is estim ated only
carries about one-third head of
water, which keeps the reservoir
only about one-half filled. T his
is a result predicted by George I.ea
and other water works contractors
at the very outset of the work.
However, with plenty of water in
the west side reservoir there is no
danger of a shortage this year or ,
during the promised enlargem ent
of the pipe for some distance from
th e intake.
