The hen, Lady Washington by title aud family name, is said to be valued at just $12,000. W ouldn’t that make you cackle? Well, we should scratch! Lady Washiug- tou belongs to a firm o f poultry- men at Scranton, Pa., who recently received by wire an offer o f $6,000 for her from a Philadelphia mil lionaire chickeu fancier, who co v eted her so that he could show her off at the Philadelphia poultry show. The firm wired back: “ Your offer of $6,000 not accepted. Our Black Orpington hen Lady Washington cannot be bought until after the Scranton show. We will then consider an offer of $12,000.” When Lady W ashing ton drinks she can use the prize cup 9he won as the best bird at the recent poultry show in New York. If any reckless millionaire fancies killing her for his table he will set before his guests the costliest meat ever cooked, for Lady Washington weighs just ten pounds, and even little Willie can figure out that that is $1,200 a pound. The eggs from this phenomenal chickeu sell for $25 apiece, sc that if one should call for ham aud Lady Washington eggs— say three fried — his breakfast would cost him $75.15, the 15 cents being for the ham. It is a real pity that that western prospector who suddenly struck a gold mine aud went to New York to get a square meal Delmouico’s could not have had “ ham and” with Lady Washing ton’s eggs as the “ and” part. lie couldn't read the French menu, so finally he said to the waiter, “ Oh dad blame it, just fetch me a huti dred dollars’ worth o ' ham an eg g s.” __________ Alfred Jury last week sold a small tract of land near Yakima. Mrs. Lake of Oakland, Oregon, this week purchased Bert Denham’s place of 21 acres east of the city, paying $2,700. Alfred Jury has bought the Gar rison property, consisting of a lot and six-room cottage on the west side, the consideration being $1,- 500. Mr. Elliott, who travels on the coast for a Chicago house, last week bought 15 acres of the Spray ranch, two miles east of town, the consideration being $2,550. Mr. Florer of Portland has bought 7 acres from Wiley Cox, located east o f town, the consider ation being $700. Mr. Florer is building a comfortable cottage on the place. The Beidler brothers have bought the 12 acte tract in the Knox bottom 1% miles east of town which Bert Denham bought aud fenced last season. Price paid was $1300. It is all first class bot tom land aud uuder cultivation. C- E. Ditiges, proprietor of the Grand theatre, bought a sightly half acre tract in the Gowdy addi tion Saturday adjoing the home of W . C. Conner on the south. He will proceed to improve it and de velop another pretty home in that part of Cottage Grove.
