F inch who was hanged in Salem F rid ay for the m urder of Ralph Fisher, was taken to a P ortland cem etery an d buried. There were no curious spectators an d th e relatives and friends of the dead m an chose this tim e for the burial so there would be none. It is also said th a t there w as no cere mony, b ut th a t the coffin co n tain ing the body was silently lowered and the earth heaped over it. You c a n ’t afford to do without one. 27-31* COTTAGE GROVE V i to Scott Jackson, 17-tf Salem, Nov. 13.— Despite the streuuous efforts of his attorney and a few friends to have the sen tence of Jim F inch com m uted to life imprisonm ent, the governor re fused to interfere, and at 12:30 Friday in the execution cham ber at the state penitentiary he paid with his life the m urder of a brother attorney, Ralph B. Fisher. Finch was well know n in this locality and Creswell, having for years been connected with news papers at A lbany an d Salem. T he m u rd er of Ralph B. Fisher was said to have been coldblooded cow ardly and perm ediated, and not a shadow of ground could be found for executive interference. Much sym pathy is expressed for F in ch ’s wife an d aged m other but none for the m urderer, whose life did not pay for the one he de stroyed . Finch retained his nerve to the last an d died m ain tain in g th a t he killed Fisher in self defense. He said in substance on the scaffold: “ G entlemen, this is the saddest moment in hum an life. I w ant to say to you I expect to meet my God. I did not assassi nate Ralph Fisher as he sat in his chair. T here is no tru th in it. 1 am not guilty aud should not he punished. T his head hears upon it m arks th at will show my sta te m ents are true. I wish to submit to a post-mortem exam ination and ask Dr. Sm ith and any of the prison physicians to m ake it. “ G entlem en, 1 have tried to tell the tru th ., 1 ask God to forgive the new spaper men and K ay .” He was attended to th e scaffold by a priest. T he sentence of H arry Daley, m urderer o f Saloon Keeper K in ney, was com m uted to life im pris onm ent, the petition for executive clemency being signed by K in n ey ’s wife and brothers.
