I w ant to tell the public th a t this is a false hood. 1 never told any one I was m aking $14.00 per m outh per cow. 1 never have m ade any such sta te m ents to any one and whomever said 1 did is telling som ething that is not true. My check for O ctober the returns from six cows was $55.20. VVe had our b u tter an d cream for family of four, w hich w ould be, as near as I can tell, $7.50, which would m ake my check $62.70. T his is the best 1 h av e ever done Butter fat at the present tim e is 37c per pound. Now ta k e these same cows for April, May, J u n e and July an d they would m ak e with 25 cent cream, about $25.00 or $30.00. My cows m ade me last year $100. per head, counting skim m ilk, butler and cream for family and heifer calves, with w hich returns I am well pleased. However, 1 d o u ’t w ant any one to tell I am m ak in g $14.00 per head per mouth from my cows. Boom the country, b u t tell the tru th and then ¡m igration will not be disappointed. Y ours truly, T om C o x . T h e above letter of Mr. Cox is tim ely and to the point, for there is a woefull tendency in these boost er times to m agnify an d ex ag g er ate the conditions, possibilities, opportunities, productions and re sources here in Oregon where it is not in the least necessary, for all of these conditions an d opportuni ties tru th fu lly stated are favorable enough to attract the attention and prove a m agnet to people who live in less favored states an d localities. T h is exaggeration is apparent on every h an d and should be frowned down, as satisfied an d perm anent investors and home builders cannot be secured in this w ay. T he Leader has bee« trying for the past two years under the pres ent m anagem ent to keep m isrepre sentation and exaggeration reg ard ing our clim atic conditions, soil, farm products, m ines and tim ber industries, and opportuities open to home seekers and investors here, out of its columns, an d while we have succeeded to such a degree th a t the paper is occasion ally term ed a knocker, yet we are som etim e trapped by o v e r enthusiastic people who are com paratively new comers, or some one over auxious to negotiate a sale. W e endorse fully file position of Mr. Cox on th is subject. and there is good reason for our steady and satisfactory growth. T he fact th a t we have uot only held our business but practically doubled it with all com petition, indicates th at the public m ind has not lost sight of the essential requirem ents that m ake a b ank sound and safe. T he principles of conservative b an k in g th at have governed our development in the past will shape our future policy.
