Mauwariug and family and his wife’s sister, Miss F.thel Davenport, of Inwocd, Iowa, were guests of their old friends, F. It. Phillips and family of this oitv last week. Several days were spent in camp life, fishiug and hunting in the tall timber on Mosby creek, which was a great treat to the lowans. Mr. Manwaring is cash ier of the Farmer's National Hank of his home town and is also inter ested in lumbering and therefore the fine timber of this section was a great revelation to him and he greatly deplored the apparent wastefulness of our mill men in cutting out only the best of the timber and leaving so much which would be of great value east, ly ing around to decay. Mr. Man- waring may return to the west again next year and invest in some Oregon timber. The family left for Seattle Saturday to visit the ex position,, after which they will re turn home. Has DEER AND KI1EED A NEW f Bvirgle^r Proof £ Roseburg, Or., Aug. 7.— The first fatality of the season ill this region due to a hunter's mistaking a man for a deer occurred Saturday morning at 8 o ’clock, when M. I). Ferguson a Yoncalla farmer, was shot and almost iustalitly killed in Flk I lead canyon, near Yoncalla, by a companion named Bacon, of Cottage Drove. Ferguson was killed just eight miles east of the place where Her man Westenheiser was killed by the accidental discharge of his own rifle June 15. Ferguson and Bacon were ac companied on their hunting expe dition by two men, Lafleur and Brumfield of Cottage Drove. When they reached the canyon at Elk Head they adopted the com mon method of hunting. One man stalationed himself at the head of the canyon while the other three started to the bottom to beat the brush, where deer are apt to lie concealed. While making his way down the side of the canyon Bacon saw Ferguson crawling through the brush. Taking de liberate aim, lie sent a bullet through Ferguson’s body. He hastened across the canyou to se cure his supposed game and found his companion in his death strug gle Ferguson died as Bacon reached his side. Ferguson came to Yoncalla about a year ago. He was mid dle aged and leaves a wife and six children, W indow Locker AND S ash H o ld e r Protect your windows from burglars by using Hart’s Burglar Proof Anti-Rattler, Automatic Ventilation Sash Holder and Locker. One always thinks of locking the doors but leaves the windows unlocked, therefore you are not safe in your house from burglars. W e have the best all round window lock and holder on the market. 1st. Because the lock works automatically and always locks'itself and the window cannot fall and break the glass. 2nd. Because the lock keeps windows from rattling, which no other lock will do and is worlli more than the price of it. 3rd. Because you can ventilate your rooms from top or bottom, which ought to be done for health's sake; and no one can enter from the outside^ and you will feel perfectly safe. 4th. Because they are made out of steel and are stronger and better than all other sash holders. W ill hold any win dow, large or small.
