IN STATE RIFEE TOURNAMENT Eugene, August 4.— “ As soon as we can get them we will put 2000 men to work on the Natron extension contract,” said O. A. Wattis, a member of the I'tah Construction Co., which has the contract to build the first section of the Southern Pacific Company’s Natrou-Klamath extension east from Natron, to a Guard re|iorler this morning. The Southern I’acfic Company has awarded the first contract to this company, which is one of the liest known in railroad construction work on the coast. Mr. Wattis, accompanied by his brother, I,. K. Wallis, arrived in Iiugene this morning from Oroville, Cal., tolie- giu the work of building the road. They were accompanied by nine other men who will have charge of different departments of the con struction work. They drove to Natron this morning and are spending the day lit that vicinity arranging for the beginning of the work. The men liesides the Wattis brothers are as follows: N. J . Sweeney. W. H. Hunt, W. II. Messinggr, W. W. Hunt, G. W. Doe, John Garrison, Ralph Smart, W. A. BeclUell and G. S. Colley. Washington, July 5.—Taft left the White House for the capital to sign the tariff bill at L.V.l p. in., the bill having passed the senate today. At 2:15 p. in. today the senate adopted the conference repoit on the tariff bill, which effects the final passage of the bill through congress. The vole was 47 »yes and .11 nays. The bill received all the Republican votes except those of Bristow, Clapp, Cummins, Hoi liver, l.al'ollette, Beveridge and Nelson. The senate then took up the con current resolution reducing the rates in the leather schedule. Nineteen guardsmen will lie se lected this week to make up the team for the eastern match. Fif teen of these men will lie selected from among those having the largest scores and showing the most ability in placoig bullseves with consistency. In addition, there will lie three officers, a team captain, a team coach and a team spotter. Departure for ( )hio will lie made the middle or latter part of next week, according to the present plan. The team will be absent about two weeks, taking part in all the events of the National com petition, The National shoot com mences this year on August 2.1, preceded by two days only of pre liminary practice.
