T his was one of the prime factors that caused the recent “ p an ic" and so far as this coast is concerned was the chief one. A high freight rate w as to hold up the coast mills. It succeeded pretty well, but the re suits are not entirely satisfactory even to the operators who planned an d executed it. However, we confidently expect a very good year for local lum berm en. After the Pacific coast product is once introduced in the east it cannot be agaiu elim inated entirely under any conditions. A GLARING INCONSISTENCY. CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE 'The city council is to be heartily commended upon its determ ination to stam p out the sale of the so- called “ near beer” in this city, which is too often used as a blind for selling all kinds of intoxicating liquors contrary to law and to the expressed will of the people at the last general election. At the last meeting of the city council, S at urday evening. Councilm an Bar tels was appointed to notify all dispensers of "n e ar b eer” in this city to “ cut it o u t,” and the re corder was instructed to have pre pared an ordinance prohibiting the sale of "n e a r beer" in th is city to l>e adopted at the next regular m eeting of the city council. This is action advocated by the Leader, not from any personal, selfish or m ercenaty standpoint, b ut simply from the fact that we favor the moral as well as the com mercial and industrial upbuilding an d de velopment of Cottage G rove and vicinity and the enforcement of the laws of the state, county and m unicipality. It has alw ays lieen our contention that a law w hich is not meritorious enough to be en forced should lie repealed and il not repealed should be en forced. 'Pile m ayor and council are entitled to com m endation for the step tliev are tak in g toward the more strict enforcement of the laws. O ne of the glariug inconsisten cies and abuses in high places, is the act of the L'nited States govern m eut in licensing the sale of liquor in dry territory, subject however, to certain local legal restrictions. In other words the governm ent says, " a license is hereby granted you to dispense liquors, but you are to take your own chances re g arding your violation of the local option laws of your city, county, or sta te .” It would be just as reasonable and consistent for the state governm ent or county court to license th e sel’ing of intoxicants in a dry county or city with the THAT’S CORRECT— YOU ARE RIGHT fatherly adm onition to “ look out for th e county and local officials.
