A re you sure you know where , your boys are evenings— positively know , or ju st th at they are " in the neighborhood somewhere?” Every boy is a live wire that, unless properly insulated, will do m ischief to him self and others. Even then the wires get crossed, an d there are all sorts of com plica tions. O f course your girls are safely indoors under the p aren tal eyes, or properly chaperoned elsewhere; you w ould not dream of allow ing them o u t after n ig h t had fallen: but “ th e boys can ta k e care of th em selv es,” you say. T h a t is one of the greatest m istakes p are n ts m ake. Y our boys are as ten d er p lan ts as y o u r girls. T h e old idea th a t a d au g h ter is more of a responsibility th a n a son is a m istak e. If an y th in g , the boys are more of a charge, for a girl is p ut on th e defensive from the tim e she is born; she is m ade aw are of the rag in g lion on every street-corner seeking to devour her: h ut th e boy, iu m any cases, is totally unarm ed w ith advice of the rig h t n atu re an d is sent out to do b attle with the m onster whose h ab itat is the corner an d the loaf itig place, in city, tow n an d coun try. boys are not so q uick to rec ognize w ickedness as th eir si ters, and it soaks into them thoro ighly and surely, am i som etim es a vholc lifetim e is insufficient to eradicate the harm ful im pressions received in childhood. T herefore, the m o th er’s d uty is as ab so lu te to her sotf as to her daughter, an d does not end in sim ply p ro v id in g him with food atul an ed u catio n , and in se n d in g him to S u n day-school.— T he M arch New Idea W om an’s M agazine.
