Several large reduction plants have been put in readiness for op eration in this cam p, one by the W est Coast Mining Co , another by F. J. H ard on his valuable properties, aud a third is lieing in stalled by the Mayflower people. Regarding the great m ining in dustry of the country President elect T aft had the following to say recently liefore the m ining con gress: I am glad of an opportunity to express my interest in the im p o rtan t work which the American m ining congress is doing iu behalf of the m ining industry an d I de sire to encourage and cooperate in this work iu every possible way. ' T he m ining industry of this country, w hich is second only to the ag ricu ltu ral in its contribution to th e national wealth, which fur nishes more than 66 per cent of the total freight traffic of the coun* try, and which furnishes more th an a million men in its difficult and dangerous tasks, deserves all the assistance which this govern ment can render it. “ No country is so rich iu these resources w hich m ake for great and iiennaneut wealth as is the United States: b ut this condition of affairs has helped develop a n a tional habit of waste iu the use of our forests, our soils, our m inerals aud other resources. Fortunately, however, the public conscience of the country is aw akening to both the loss of life and waste of m a terials in all of our industries and we m ust see to it that the P "'u*- uient is guided wisely and carried forward to success. Black Butte District. T here is one m ining district in Lane county th a t produces only one m ineral. T h at is the Black Butte quicksilver district. T he district is located in the southern part of the county, 16 miles from Cottage Grove. It is four miles by two in extent, all of which is rich in the ore. A new reduction plant has ju st been p ut in operation. A force of 40 men is em ployed. Twelve thousand feet of tunnels have been opened. T he mill is located at the base of a 1700-foot hill, so all the ore can be handled by a gravity system. T o show the m agnitude of this great deposit of ore, it need only lie said that tile out crop on the summ it of Black Butte shows for a continu ous distance of 75(X) feet and that the main fissure is 4(X) feet wide aud th at this entire width is quick silver bearing. Openings on these veins have been m ade at 1300 and 1600 feet lielow the sum m it of the m ountain. From these figures it is evident it will require the work of m any generations to exhaust the supply. T he Black Butte district is ad m irably located for economic m in ing. An am ple supply of water, abundance of water power, u n lim ited tim ber and soft rock, are factors th at reduce the cost of w orking. As illustrating this point, pub lished rejxirts give the average cost of quicksilver ore mined in Cali fornia at $3 to $4.80 per ton, while the average cost of production at Black Butte has been $1.40 per ton.
